while vinyl shopping yesterday, i bought album entitled the Beach Boys 1961, half of it is the Hite Morgan sessions, and the other half is early versions of some oftheir songs and a couple others performed by "the Surfin' Six" (instrumental band).

Here's the tracklist:
Surfer Girl (early version)
Barbee
Luau
Little Deuce Coop* (yes that spelling)
Surfin'

Surfin' Safari (early version)
Judy
What is a YOung Girl Made of
409*
Karate*

*performed by the Surfin' Six

the Liner notes are by Dorinda Morgan, in which they misspell Jardin

so is this a rarity? i'd never seen it before.
also, i bought 10 Years of Harmony, a great compilation

The line up is suspicious though Grin

Not sure how rare it really is...I know I've seen 6 or 7 copies of it, and I wasn't even looking for it. I think that in the record store I used to work at they had a copy for about $15. But then again, maybe it's worth more than that these days.

I guess it depends which version and what folk are willing to pay for it ... I've several in my collection, various titles, both vinyl and CD. All made obsolete by the Beach Boys Lost & Found CD of several years back, which had excellent sound quality. And of course if Beard To Ill had ever released First Wave that would probably have been definitive. Ah well... I hope he spent our money wisely.

In a word, no.

Get Lost and Found. Better sound quality.

Ten years is a great buy, but the 61 sessions aren't too rare. If you have one with the alternate vocal on Barbie it may be worth more.

It's listed in Brad Elliott's magnificent 'Surf's Up' book on page 119. The LP you bought was originally released in August 1977. 'Karate' is also performed by the Beach Boys, by the way. I don't think it's particularly rare, though...
