I hope the link works. It's late 80's Brian doing "Love and Mercy" with an extra 3rd verse that I have never heard before. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i93mffw_UzE

That was pretty strange indeed. The extra verse was cool to hear. Brian looked kinda spaced out but in that era its not too surprising.
Oh and the audience clapping on 1 and 3 was driving me absolutely crazy!

Strong (and never denied) rumor has it that Landy added the third verse, and that Sire promptly took a large pair of scissors to it.

Hasn't Brian performed it a few times with the third verse added? I'm speaking of his touring of the past few years. I think I may have even seen one of these performances, but I could've sworn the extra verse had different words than the ones on this clip.

Only thrid verse I've ever heard BW sing is the "I was prayin' to a God who just doesn't seem to hear" one.

You may be thinking of the alternate lyrics to "Surfer Girl" that he added a couple of times.
"God shines down his love and mercy On those in need tonight"
instead of
"We could ride the surf together While our love would grow."
One of Brian's stranger ideas.

For real?! When did he use those? (alternate Surfer Girl lyrics)
Fall of 99, most notably at the Bridge School performances

Bingo! That's it! I think it was during the "Pet Sounds" tour.

One gig I was at, he also sang "television" instead of "TV" - really screwed the scanning of the line. My impression is that it wasn't planned, if the band's reaction was anything to go by.

I'm too lazy to dig out my old VHS tape, but...
On that 1989 TV show, Endless Summer, Brian did a couple of solo songs. One was "In My Car" and the other was "Love And Mercy". Remember, he was dressed in black leather and did that embarrassing dancing and gesturing. Didn't he insert the "I was prayin' to a god who just doesn't seem to care" line during that performance? I might be wrong, though...
