Last time I started this, everyone had so much interesting stuff to say about favourite soundtracks. Been listening to The Graduate S/T today... really mellow. Also love Midnight Cowboy. And Saturday Night Fever. And Jackie Brown.

So, post away about soundtracks you love... including soundtracks that are better than the films they belong to!

"Eternal Sunshine" works really well as an album.  Even my small children dug it, day after day, driving home from school.

There aren't a whole lot of "song" tracks per se, but the instrumentals are among Jon Brion's loveliest offerings.

"Casino Royale"
"You Are What You Eat"
"A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum"
"Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid"
"The Sting"
"Mary Poppins"
"The Sound Of Music"
"My Fair Lady" is especially good on acid.

I love anything by Jon Brion. "Punch-Drunk Love" is about the best, though.

Other faves:

The "Mondo Morricone" box: Lush, exotic, psyched-out stuff that you probably wouldn't associate with the guy mostly famous for his work on Sergio Leone Westerns. More like tranced-out Bacharach by way of Bernard Herrmann. Lots of circular, spiralling melodies.

And, speaking of Herrmann: "Vertigo," "The Day the Earth Stood Still."

John Barry: "OHMSS," "The Knack," "Deadfall."

(Seems like I post the same sh*t every time we do one of these soundtrack threads.)

Edward Scissorhands is good.  I have to add Pee-Wee's Big Adventure to that.

Me too!  It's not available, though.  I have no idea why.  I like it more than his other stuff.

Ian, what makes Fire Walk With Me work better than the other Lynch soundtracks for you?

Utter complicity with it's visuals. Pure emotion without irony. Most memorable melodies and themes.
I love the other Lynch scores as well, except Toto's work on Dune, of course.

Goodfellas is my favorite "chosen music" score.
The juxtaposition of Jump Into The Fire by Nilsson, Monkey Man by the Stones, Mannish Boy by Muddy Waters, What Is Life by George Harrison and Magic Bus by The Who is crazy and magical.
Harder They Come is a fabulous choice, bravo.
