For those who are interested, I'm in the process of publishing some of Jan Berry's original music scores from the 1960s. I'm transcribing them from the original documents used by the Wrecking Crew to record the original Jan & Dean songs.

I'll post information for each title as they become available.

The series began with publication of the transcription for "Dead Man's Curve."

Here's an audio preview . . .

For anyone interested in Jan Berry's arrangements for brass and woodwinds:

"Batman" (1966) — Alternate Brass and Woodwind Arrangement (intended for live performances) — (11 parts): Alto Sax, Tenor Sax, Baritone Sax; Trumpet 1-3, French Horn, Trombone 1-3, Tuba.

Note: The music notation software cannot realistically reproduce the glissandos and falls written in the original music score. Otherwise, the playback is remarkably authentic.

“Dead Man’s Curve” (Audio Preview) — Jan Berry’s brass and woodwind arrangement for "Dead Man's Curve" (1964), from the full version intended for live performances in the '60s. The studio (hit single) version was culled from this arrangement, recorded with fewer players. The verses and outro are the same in both versions. Again, the music notation software cannot realistically reproduce the glissandos and slides written in the original music score. The recitation section accounts for the brief gap of silence.

"Rockin' Little Roadster" (1964) — Audio Preview — Jan Berry’s brass and woodwind arrangement, accompanied by parts for bass and Danelectro six-string bass (guitar), as written in the original music score used by the Wrecking Crew to record the original song.

Now that's a fitting arrangement for a song called "Ride the wild Surf". The strings come actually crushing down like big waves. Beautiful. Not to forget the cool guitar intro

“Ride the Wild Surf” offers a great example of multiple key changes in Jan Berry’s arrangements. The song begins in Ab Major (intro/first verse and chorus). It then transitions to A Major (second verse and chorus/bridge/third verse and chorus), and then finally to Bb Major (fourth chorus/ending).

And you could make a case for a third key change with the intro. The chord progression for the four-bar intro is D/D/G/D-Eb7 . . . But after the opening four bars, it does not resolve back to D. Instead, it transitions to Ab Major. As Jan said to Brian Wilson, that is sophisticated. But instead of writing the four-bar opening in D, Jan left it in Ab.

Since publication of Jan Berry’s original 1965 music score for “You Really Know How to Hurt a Guy” is forthcoming (Fiji Printing #13)—Pop Symphony version, with a few added elements from the hit single version—I thought I’d share some audio tracks featuring the sound font playback from the music notation application.

I’ve isolated the different sections—Rhythm, Strings, Brass, and Woodwinds—so listeners can hear what each section sounds like when accompanied by the bass line. And then compare the sections to playback for the full ensemble.

This approach is revelatory, allowing listeners to hear the nuances of this song on a deeper level. Then go back and listen to the original recordings (Hit Single version and Pop Symphony version) to gain a better appreciation of what’s happening instrumentally.

You Really Know How to Hurt a Guy:

Rhythm Section — sound font playback

String Section with Bass Line — sound font playback

Woodwind Section with Bass Line — sound font playback

Brass Section with Bass Line — sound font playback

Full Ensemble — sound font playback

Transcribed from Jan Berry’s original music scores.

I know it's probably the wrong place to do this, but wow, what a cool bunch of clips! I had seen the Zappa appearance before, but the news B-roll raw footage of the J&D concert finale from their pilot was a nice treat to see. That is one of the few times you get to see the "Wrecking Crew" in action, in the pilot it's in color of course, but it's always cool to see those musicians on video. Notice Tommy Tedesco, Don Peake, a young-looking Hal Blaine, and I think they even got Plas Johnson in there among others. Again, anyone interested in the  Wrecking Crew should seek out the pilot episode on the J&D show, it's in color too and very enjoyable.

And just a warning, be prepared to go down the YouTube rabbit hole if you start watching Frank Zappa interviews. It happened again when I was watching this one. The man was ahead of his time, and his commentary is even more valid today as it was 40-50 years ago. Do yourself a favor and go through those clips of him discussing current events. One of my favorites from the Dinah Shore appearance is this quote:
"Every time you see a political figure in the presence of a person from the music business or from television or from the movies, you should smell a rat and get away from it"

I cannot imagine what Zappa would be saying today if he had been alive in the past 30 years, because much of what he was warning against or predicting as early as the 1960's currently plays out on an almost daily basis, and he had been calling it out all along.

Sorry for the derail, but those were cool clips and thanks for posting them.
