Just discovered that a new album called “18” is being released by Jeff Beck and Johnny Depp.
This album has 2 BB covers and 1 Dennis Wilson cover. Wonder if these are guitar only or with vocals, wonder if Jeff beck has performed those songs live or released these covers before?  Looks interesting, especially the Dennis Cover, as don’t see a lot of Dennis Solo covers.

Here is full track list.

1. “Midnight Walker” (Davy Spillane cover)
2. “Death And Resurrection Show” (Killing Joke cover)
3. “Time” (Dennis Wilson cover)
4. “Sad Motherfuckin’ Parade” (Johnny Depp original)
5. “Don’t Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder)” (Beach Boys cover)
6. “This Is A Song For Miss Hedy Lamarr” (Johnny Depp original)
7. “Caroline, No” (Beach Boys cover)
8. “Ooo Baby Baby” (The Miracles cover)
9. “What’s Going On” (Marvin Gaye cover)
10. “Venus In Furs” (The Velvet Underground cover)
11. “Let It Be Me” (The Everly Brothers cover)
12. “Stars” (Janis Ian cover)
13. “Isolation” (John Lennon cover)*

I suspect the Dennis cover will sound something like this:

Ugh, Depp is such a gross creep. This doesn’t interest me. It’s a shame Beck’s collaboration with Brian fizzled out.

Not bad at all, Depp's vocals are really that good, but how great is it after 45 years to hear a Dennis song live in concert!!! Absolutely cool, and it does make one think just how Time may have sounded live had Dennis ever gotten the chance to perform it.

While I agree there might be some interesting stuff in the can from whatever Brian and Beck recorded, I think Beck choosing to collaborate with someone like Depp right now, coupled with Beck's a-hole attitude in the aftermath of his tour with Brian, kind of tells you potentially some things about Beck as well.

It's a bummer that *this* is the project that would prominently feature several Dennis/BB deep cuts. The Depp/Beck "brand" is not something I'd want to be associated with at all.

Even before the revelations of recent times, I've always found Depp's "music career" as such to essentially just be like John Stamos, but with more money and bigger name rock star friends.

But hey, I guess that "She & Him" Brian tribute album might be interesting.

It sounds like you don't like the people performing the music. I don't really care about that. The music sounds good.
Dennis wasn't the best person in the world at all times, but many put that past because of the songs.

Well, of course not even implicit but very explicit in what I wrote is that I think the two people behind the album are moderately to severely gross.

But aside from their personal lives, I also find Depp to be a more expensive version of John Stamos. Depp clearly bought his way (with fame if not actual money) into being a rock star. As I mentioned, he's Stamos but with much more money and bigger name rock star friends.

Not that there can't be non-professional musicians/singers that have true talent. But just as with Depp's non-singing voice/persona, I find his singing to be far too grumbly/mumbly/incoherent.

I think both Depp and Beck have a checkered work history that makes their collaboration make total sense. Beck has alienated a lot of people in the music/rock world and is known to be cantankerous and difficult to work with, and Depp has a history of showing up late, being too f-ed up to work, etc., and obviously has what is at the very least a *mixed bag* PR situation currently brewing. In short, Beck has probably run out of any great options for people to sing on his albums, and Depp has run out of high-paying movie gigs and is doing the self-indulgent rock star thing instead.

The Dennis Wilson comparison doesn't really do Depp a lot of favors, as Depp is clearly in some level of denial about his work drug/alcohol abuse. I think far more self-delusion and denial than Dennis ever seemed to have. And even with a pretty decent level of self-awareness concerning his problems, Dennis unfortunately wasn't able to survive.

But again, purely from a PR standpoint as it pertains to the Beach Boys, this isn't exactly like an A-list, homerun project to have any even tangential association with. To be clear, I don't think this project hurts the BBs or Dennis; they can't control who covers their songs.

Honestly, this is lovely. It reminds me of attending the Jeff Beck-Brian-Al-Blondie tour of 2013. I didn't enjoy every moment of that 2013 show, but the best collaborative moments were much like this -- took both artists a bit out of their comfort zones, and into some interesting places.
