Unreleased snippet of he Last Song w/Lana Del Rey.  Don't know if any of you have heard this.  Wasn't Frank Ocean also discussed as a guest artist on NPP at some point?

I don’t think Frank Ocean ever showed up in the studio. But that sounds pretty darn good!

There is a fanmix too, featuring both Brian and Lana:

It's a pity that this collaboration was never completed. However I like this fanmix more than the official NPP version. It's short, haunting and fades into mystery. Smiley

The existence of this snippet strongly implies to me that the recording was more or less “finished.” Like maybe they wanted to come back and give it another go, another take or something. But I can’t imagine she came in and didn’t sing all of the lines that they would or could have possibly used for her contribution. She wasn’t co-writing it, she wasn’t playing anything on it. All her contribution would have consisted of would be lead lines.

Brian said in an interview back in 2015 that “she canceled on us”, or something along those lines. I’m guessing someone from that camp canceled *using* her vocals on the song, as opposed to canceling the contribution. Clearly, she was in there and recorded. She would have been the “biggest” guest star on the album; I’m guessing for some reason her camp nixed it.

Hopefully all of the extant work on the song will be shared.

That reminds me that the great bassist Tal Winkenfeld, who played years with Jeff Beck, was enthusiastic about four songs which were started with Brian, Jeff and other musicians, among them Tal. Nothing ever surfaced. Sad

I think that was probably much more on Brian’s side as far as the decision to not use the Beck tracks. The 2013 tour with Beck was rocky, and subsequently Beck said some unflattering things about Brian in an interview or two. They may well have had mixed feelings about using the material prior to Beck’s comments, but I think once he made those comments, it was not surprising the tracks were dropped. It was unclear how finished they were in the first place.

Pairing Beck with Brian was always weird (both on tour, even with mostly separate sets, as well as pairing them in the studio), and Beck talking s**t after working with Brian was uncool (to put it very politely). As those who follow both Beck’s career and his other collaborations, this one with Brian was not the first to go south and end up unreleased.

Having said all of that, I can’t deny that I definitely want to hear these tracks. I mean, they *could* be really interesting.
