It's funny how many bands I consider among the best, and funny how many of the bands others list as best are among those I hate most, or feel ambivalent about. Shows how wide people's tastes can be, I suppose.

Far and away my favourite group of recent years is Dolorean - a group from Portland, Oregon led by songwriter Al James. Their two Yep Roc albums "Not Exotic" and "Violence in the Snowy Fields"  have become real favourites. It's kind of alt.country with influences of Elliot Smith and the Jayhawks - but they have their own distinctive sound , somewhat downbeat at times but there is beauty in the bleakness. A group I wish more people would take notice of

Dresden Dolls ARE pretty great. One band too I like is the Scissor Sisters. Saw their Live 8 performance last year and got into them then. Now I'm a fan. I love off-beat bands (hell, I'm in one!), and they certainly are a bit left-of-center.

Surfergirl...I agree about Nelly Furtado, although I do admittedly like her newest release. However, her first two albums were excellent. I miss her vocal stylings off the first album, as she now uses a more mainstream style of singing.

You know who else I really like? Vanessa Carlton. Yes, the "A Thousand Miles" girl. It's a shame that she's best known for that song. It's good, but nowhere NEAR the rest of her material, esp. off her second album. She kinda sounds like a female Todd Rundgren, if that makes any sense, and her piano playing is excellent.

I don't like much "modern" rock but I do like Muse a lot! The last two albums were amazing!
