Of Montreal
Belle & Sebastian
Fiery Furnaces
The Flaming Lips
Eels
The Delgados
Half-Handed Cloud

Then I'd have to include three older artists for making major contributions to pop music in that range: Tom Waits for his Alice and Blood Money; Brian Wilson for Smile; and Bob Dylan for both of his albums this decade.

I gotta add Neko Case, as a solo artist, to the list.

Alright...now I've got to throw in The New Pornographers. Go ahead and slam me, Luther  Wink

Since we're including bands/artists who existed professionally before 2000 but have done exceptional work in the 21st century, I agree wholeheartedly with the inclusion of Eels. My son would want me to include The Fiery Furnaces as well along with Animal Collective. Dylan has two great ones this century and The Church remain a phenomenal band, better this century than the last one (live at least).

Sorry, I'm just a peace-loving guy; I'm not slamming anybody! I disagree, of course, but hey, I disagree with something on everyone's list but my own...

I generally don't like newer rock.  I just don't see the artistry or talent in most of it.  Two bands that do strike me as talented creative and rocking are The White Stripes, and Franz Ferdinand.

I like how they do these crazy marching half-ass harmonies.  All three (or 4) of them will be singing something completely different, off beat a little bit, it just sounds great.

yes, i can undersatnd how people 'don't like newer rock'  -- but then they DO like white stripes and franz.  no criticisms of those two bands, or the poster for liking them - i like em too.... but those are just two of the most high profile bands around.  you may or may not find more you like out there....

golden smog
supergrass
constantines
goldcard
deerhoof
fiery furnances
sharon jones and the dapp kings
malkmus
gorky's zygotic mynci
beachwood sparks (awe.... so sad they are gone)

Oh, about Beachwood Sparks, though--those guys are in about half a dozen bands each, it seems. Or album projects, anyway. They're all just as derivative of previous sounds as Beachwood Sparks were, too--although of different eras. Frausdots is mid 80s-sounding. SPirit One Radio, or some such title, is a psych thing in the early Pink Floyd vein. There are more I'm forgetting... The Tyde had a new album, I believe. That's one of theirs.

The Futureheads.  Their new album, "News and Tributes" is a stone cold killer.  They kind of remind me a bit of the Jam.  Check this out if you haven't heard it yet.

Also, I have own a leaked copy of the new Of Montreal album, "Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?", and it is a great one to.  Similar to "The Sunlandic Twins" but better IMO.  Very dancy!  I think it actually comes out in January but it is out their if you search it out.....
