Pretty sure it's always been credited as David and Carl on guitars for that one.
That early-to-mid-1963 period is definitely confusing, though, as to Al's involvement, as he was touring with them on an occasional basis. We often tend to think of the 1960s BBs' lineup as having Al OR David but there certainly was a period there where the lineup included them both.

Al had not yet rejoined the band when "Surfin' U.S.A." was cut, so it's definitely Dave on the record, and not Al. However, yes - some of the tracks from the two later 1963 albums feature both of them.

You probably can’t go past the original liner notes plus additional notes from Brian in 1990 when this was issued as a twofer with Surfin Safari.

Definitely Dave. He talks about it in his book. He does that killer glissando toward the end of the track and says Murry was glaring at him in the control booth. The glissando was a nod to Dick Dale. I love it and listen to it every time toward the end. Nice little ‘street cred’ flair. Once ya hear it, you can’t unhear it.

I always wondered what happened in the outro with Brian. Did he mess up after the first "yeah" trying a second one or did they cut the tape? If the latter, why would they do that only a couple of seconds before the song ends?

a diseased bunch of mo'fos if there ever was one… their beauty is so awesome that listening to them at their best is like being in some vast dream cathedral decorated with a thousand gleaming American pop culture icons.

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.
