Whatever happened to In Bloom, and is the CD still available?

Okay, no bites - maybe should've posted in the insignificant questions thread.

How about anyone who has heard this music give a bit of a review.

Here's an interview:

But I'd like to know more about this music.

For the benefit of anyone else reading who doesn't know - In Bloom is?/was the band by Carl B & Just Wilson, Dennis & Carl's sons.

I've seen it referred to before in passing as a grunge band.

The cd's probably long out of print.

Their website's gone & the version in the internet archive was last updated in 2002 (domain expired & got taken over by spammers in 2006/07)  & the webstore selling their album has vanished,
& Ear Candy mag's interview with carl B. & Justyn is from August 2001.

Ear Candy also has a review of the album from August 2001

"In Bloom "Music"-Indie Release -

You don't often expect a "heavy" sound when you have melodic songs and tight harmonies, but IN BLOOM has achieved it on their debut CD. The songs are often sparse & quirky, taking you in an unexpected direction with their unique vocal arrangements. And that's what I like about this record: IN BLOOM consistently infuses hard driving, heavy guitar music with pristine, often soaring harmonies. But, I'm not talking faux Green Day guitars and harmony which every flavor-of-the-month band has picked up just to get on the latest Warped Tour! IN BLOOM displays their integrity by performing their own hybrid of heavy metal, blues, punk, ska, and groove jammin'. But, by adding their own blend of harmony, they have come up with a unique style that is hard to catagorize in the often piegeonholed world of today's rock.

Some of the standout tracks include: WHITE DOG (excellent, soaring harmonies!), CRAZY 'LIL MOUSE (riff driven ska), I DON'T KNOW (begins as a kind of Sublime rip, but has a very cool middle with great harmonies), HEAVY DUTY (hardcore punk), NOT CONFIRMED (heavy song which goes off on a jamming guitar tangent), BLOOZEN'T (blues rock with IN BLOOM harmony!), TAE KWON DOE (from trippy laid back rock to super fast hardcore punk speed) and MARIO (hard driving rock with fun lyrics and cool harmonies). Sure there are a few songs that are forgettable and sound a little too much like Sublime and the Offspring. There is also a tendency on some tracks to go off on a guitar jamm (however, not too excessively). But on the whole, IN BLOOM has taken the harder road of developing their own sound, rather than sound just like what they think WILL sell! And, as a result they've come away with a memorable debut.

discogs claims they released a mini album in 2011 but  it's on bandcamp & seems to be a different generic pop-punk band/artist.

My recollection is that "In Bloom" never appeared to try to do a big push. I don't think they did many gigs outside of the LA area.

They perhaps would have had more success, even if they wanted to stay stationary in LA, if they had existed in the more recent social media era where they could use Twitter/Facebook/Instagram and also Kickstarter, Patreon, etc.

Apart from some Wilson sisters projects, most other Beach Boys-offspring projects have never seemed to get much traction, and I don't know how much of that is lack of interest versus lack of motivation to really do much to kick start their own career. It seems to be a hobbyist thing for most of them.

Even the Wilson sisters, the only of the bunch to get some record deals over the years, have done projects that get abandoned. I think Carnie has at least one full album that was just never released. Wendy Wilson used to have a bunch of songs up on Facebook, and nothing ever came of that.

I saw a ton of In Bloom gigs back in the day -- mostly at 14 Below in Santa Monica.
Fabulous shows -- much looser and cooler than at the rather staid CWF events.
Band was a CA amalgam of Nirvana and Sublime.
A shame they never took the show in the road -- they would've killed on the college circuit.
I think their only non-Southern California performance was on one of the smaller stages at Woodstock '99.

I saw one of those 14 Below gigs way back in the day, it was cool. And also saw them at the CWF at UCLA. Wish I'd known more about them back when they were around. I don't remember what their internet presence was back then (did they have a Myspace? Or did they predate Myspace?)

A touch of Prince Buster too.

I saw one of their club shows -- it was LOUD, but had a lot of good energy.

I've never actually heard a note of In Bloom's music, but they still inspired me while writing a particular song in the late '90s. Here's how: I'd read a description of their music on a BBs message board, and their sound was described as "a cross between Pink Floyd and Nirvana". I thought, hmmm...wonder what that would sound like? What I came up with was kinda like psychedelic grunge. I have no idea if it sounds even remotely like In Bloom, but I'm glad to have had that inspiration!
