Anyone else noticed the similarities in these songs?

I was listening to NPP for the first time in a while yesterday and this struck me again.

It reminds me more of The Girl from Ipanema

I'm not really a musical person, but I guess I'm talking about the rhythm of the couplets:

"We've got a little hip shack and late with the rent, we bought a color TV with the money you sent."
to me follows the rhythm of:
"Mama's little baby loves Shortenin shortening, Mama's little baby loves shortening bread."

Not sure how you're getting the connection of the two songs. Not a good match but maybe you hear something that I do not.

To me it sounds like Little Saint Nick, in particular the version that's included as a bonus track in the reissue of Brian's first solo album: https://youtu.be/OJZTmL-hCBI?t=64

I can definitely hear it, nice observation!
