Yep, I'm a little bit bored at the moment, so I decided to search for a complete list with all the instruments, that were used on SMiLE. Maybe you could help me a little bit. I'm not interested in the brands, just the types of instruments. You know:

"drums, guitar, bass-guitar, banjo, cello, tannerin, carrots..." etc etc.


I'm just wondering how long the list will be. Thanks!

sleighbells, tambourine, harpsichord,piano,violin,viola,temple blocks,flute,saxophone,vibraphone,trumpet,bass harmonica etcetera

Are you talking about Smile or BWPS ? Because i think on BWPS they didn't use a real harpsichord but a electronic piano that has that sound....

Why the heck didn't they just buy the best harpsichord they could find?!?! Just as if they were on low budget or had a shortage of money. Embarrassed

As far as I know, it was intended to overdub real harpsichords and tack-pianos later, but then they were all happy with the sound of the samples. A clear case of "it's good enough".

At least it would be typically Brian !  "It's good enough. Let's go get a steak !"  Grin
I think the "samples" sound very good, but real instruments do it for me....

From what I read, it wasn't just your "canned" harpsichord sounds from the Kurzweil 2600.  Darian and a guy from Kurzweil spent a lot of time programming and tweaking the thing to sound like a real harpsichord, then they intended to replace these tracks with the real thing, but when they analyzed the playback, everyone (Brian, Darian, Jeff, Mark L., etc.) agreed the sound could not be beat. 

Haven't heard about the tack piano specifically, but I know they used real acoustic grand piano at Sunset, and overdubbed acoustic upright piano at Your Place Or Mine.  They also hired a real upright bassist, who did overdubs at Your Place Or Mine.  So they did go all out to achieve the desired sound.

Well, as much as I would love to discuss how terrible the Harpsichord and especially tack piano sound, I'll go back to the topic at hand.
There is also, off the top of my head, marimba, steel guitar, French Horn, Hammond organ (which actually was real), tympani, cabasa, claves, shaker, power tools, glockenspiel, clarinet, jew's harp, various whistles...

Oh, and "Dano" bass! the 6-string electric bass guitar.
So, bass-wise, we have electric bass guitar (probably Bob's Lakland rather than a Fender,
but I'd have to review the studio footage), 6-string Dano bass, and acoustic string bass.
Guitar-wise:  6-and-12 string electrics, 6-string acoustic.

Didn't they also use fridge parts? I heard Darian talk about that in an interview when touring Smile two years ago.
