Who else would have played the part?

Presumably ol' Bri himself!  Almost has to be!

I'll buy that! Never considered that possibility, but you're right - who else would it be?

Also, vis-a-vis six-string v. four-string basses, I am planning to show in a forthcoming video the various extremes of tone but also the potential to be virtually indistinguishable.  As I'll expand upon in the video, you can make them sound pretty much the same.  And you can get a 34" scale bass to sound quite a bit like even the more Dano-ey sounds--BUT: you have to work a lot harder for it.  And therein lies a lot of the fascinating mystery behind the basses on 60s LA records.  While there is an obvious Dano sound, it doesn't HAVE to sound that way.

Right, that's the conclusion I came to when compiling my credits and essays years ago, although I don't currently have that one up on my website. I considered that it might be Al, but Brian certainly came up with the riff himself, and it would've been just as easy, or easier, to pick up the bass and play it himself, than to take the time to teach it to Al. As far as the obvious pick sound on the strings...even though Brian has never been known to use one himself, remember that Bruce once told me that Brian would sometimes use his thumbnail as a pick!

Brian knew how to use a pick.
