There had been a duets topic on my old hobby forum before it was scuppered and for some reason it hasn't been revived on the new one. Reason enough to start one here.

I was prompted to do so by a remarkable Mozart duet I heard this morning. "Bei Männern, welche Liebe fühlen" (Men who feel the call of love) is sung by Pamina and Papageno in Act One, scene two of Mozart's opera The Magic Flute (Die Zauberflöte). The interesting thing is that they are not singing to or about each other! Pamina is singing about her Tamino and Papageno about his Papagena, although you wouldn't know it from the lyrics:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VV82NkhnD0o

https://www.oxfordlieder.co.uk/song/1387

There is at least one example of this state of affairs in pop. Mickey & Sylvia's "Love Is Strange", which initially seems like a love duet between them, ends with this exchange:

"Sylvia"
"Yes, Mickey"
"How do you call your lover boy"
"Come here, lover boy"
"And if he doesn't answer"
"Oh lover boy"
"And if he still doesn't answer"
"I simply say
[sung] Baby, oh baby
My sweet baby, you're the one"
[sung by both] "Baby, oh baby
My sweet baby, you're the one"

This is my all-time favourite Motown duet. Apart from the sincerity simply dripping off it, Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's "Your Precious Love" has the most wonderful bridge--those chords, that bass line! Roll Eyes

United in heaven. R.I.P. Tammi and Marvin.

More up to date now... I'm not the world's biggest hip hop fan but I find this duet from 2002 between Nelly and Kelly Rowland most touching.

This is pretty heart-warming. Seems Larry and Rosemary bonded on the bipolar condition they share:

The best duet - better than any in this thread, at least by now Tongue - is Mary Hopkin with Oasis (80s Oasis): https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ls73oeUwZ_4

It was mod Viper at the old Capitol BB MB who turned me onto this gorgeous duet by The Tubes--"Don't Touch Me There". Take it away, Re Styles and Fee Waybill!

I was presented with this curious duet from BoJack Horseman on SoundCloud after finding a King Crimson album there that was unavailable on YouTube.

According to Bill Gates, "'I Will Always Think Of You' is a juxtaposed duet sung by Honey Sugarman (Jane Krakowski) & Eddie (Colman Domingo) in different time periods in the BJH episode 'The Old Sugarman Place'. It is also briefly sung by Crackerjack Sugarman and Honey Sugarman at the beginning of the episode." So now you know.  Wink

Usually I am not a fan of duets. But every now and then I have to make exceptions, especially when it comes to George Jones and Tammy Wynette. They did some fantastic work together:

Cryin' Time

And speaking of George, he also cut a great bluegrass album with Melba Montgomery:

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

I'm the same! Maybe that's why many of my choices are a little on the weird side. Grin

Most "girl-boy" duets I like are straightforward line or verse trading with little or no vocal harmonizing (unlike your "Cryin' Time" and "One").

Peter and Kate's "Don't Give Up" is one of the... well, don't-give-up message songs I post when someone dear to me is struggling:

I was in a bad place when I first heard "Where Is The Love" in 1972. Not so now.

Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway really nail it. Horrific to know that Hathaway jumped to his death seven years later.

Two prodigious talents--RIP, Donny.

Thanks to this thread I reintroduced myself to a wonderful album that came out I believe around 2006, "Adieu, False Heart". It was just about the last thing Linda Ronstadt recorded as her Parkinson's was starting to cause some problems with her voice. She recorded this acoustic album with Cajun musician/singer Ann Savoy.

I find it relaxing, perfect for a lazy afternoon.
Please check out the following covers - these are particularly wonderful. Beautiful harmonies:

Another favourite duet of mine is "Don't You Want Me" by The Human League from their superb album Dare! (every track a winner).

Excellent choice! It immediately reminded me of another of one of my favorite '80s duets, "Obsession" by Animotion.

Nice! I must have missed that at the time (a generational thing). As for Dare!, it's one of those albums of all good stuff. Every track a winner, including "Get Carter". I don't believe Human League recorded any other duets...

"That's The Way (I'm Only Trying To Help You)" by Culture Club is a pretty good candidate for this category, with backing vocalist Helen Terry up there in the spotlight with Boy George:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCM18h4xwPQ

I keep coming back to those first two CC albums. George sounds terrified on the first one but seems resigned to his dangerous lifestyle on the second.

Here's another '80s duet, JK. "What Have I Done to Deserve This," by the the Pet Shop Boys with Dusty Springfield. Great song. I remember watching the video when I was a kid and being enamored of the dancers' glittery costumes and big feather headdresses.

Can't say I've ever been a Culture Club fan, but that duet you posted really nicely showcases George's voice. But that Gaye/Terrell song you shared was gorgeous!

Thanks, bc. Given the right material (as here) Dusty was unbeatable!

And that Gaye/Terrell duet gets me every time. Motown could deliver the most heartbreaking "middle eights".
