He didn’t play the short Spanish tour as he was recovering from appendicitis

Was that the tour with Jerry Lee Lewis, Ian?

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

Cool, than this is from the same show:

Filmed at Paseo De La Alameda in Valencia (Spain) on 07. October 1990.

Jerry Lee Lewis - Great Balls Of Fire (Spain 1990)

It's unfortunate that Carl wasn't with them.

This TV appearance has to come from the same tim. Just Jerry Lee and piano:

Interesting that Al takes the second verse lead on “California Dreamin’” in Carl’s absence. This is notable because most Carl-less examples I’ve heard of the song in the Al-Beach Boys era have Al handing that verse off to someone else. Brian in 2012. I think Chris Farmer sang it at a Carl-less show in 1995 or 96, etc.

The band must have been offered a nice hunk of money to do those gigs in Spain in 1990. They weren't otherwise touring Europe at the time. They left the US, did the gigs (*without* Carl), and then came back.

I believe Carl also missed several US shows just prior to the Spain gigs. I recall an early era camcorder video circulates of the September 28, 29, or 30 Tahoe gig. Same lineup as Spain as I recall, with Stanley Sichel filling in on lead guitar (and everybody else picking up the requisite Carl lead parts).

Thanks for the reminder! Check out Brian's lead here in 2012! Wish someone could get him back into that mode https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9SOQKA9TLdw&t=50s
