Odd that there hasn't been one of these on Smiley for the past 143 years. (That typo is staying put! LOL) Just to keep things simple, these can be quotes relating to any section of the forum. I suppose I better start. Grin

"At the Albert Hall last year, Beefheart was standing at the back of the floor while the band worked towards a balance. 'How's that, Don,' asked Zoot Horn Rollo. 'Like a custard with two feathers sticking in it,' replied Don and the band went 'Aha' and adjusted their instruments accordingly."

(John Peel, "The New Captain Beefheart Album Clear Spot", Creem, 1 February 1973)

Khrushchev was talking to some collective farmers. "How's life?" he joked. "It's great!" they joked back.

"When Holst completed The Planets in 1917, little was known about the worlds he represented musically, and he didn't care. His inspiration was astrological and his focus terrestrial; War, Peace, Jollity, Old Age, Messenger, Magic and Mystic.

"Today we have visited all the planets, and at first sight this new knowledge might appear to jar with Holst's work, but this would be a superficial conclusion. Set against what we now know, the work catalyses new ideas that enrich and inform debates in progress today, as art with depth must do.

"Mars was once Earth-like. Life may have begun on the red planet and may exist today. The discovery of a second genesis in our Solar System would have profound cultural consequences: it would mean that we are not alone in the Universe.

"Venus was also once Earth-like, but a runaway greenhouse effect has turned a potential paradise into a vision of hell. Listen to Holst's Venus with this in mind, and the piece becomes a requiem for a failed planet, a reminder that planets--just as human beings--were once born and will one day die. It is this fragility that makes them precious."

(Professor Brian Cox, in this year's BBC Proms book)

"Just about a mile from where the motorways all merge
You can view the national edifice, a monumental splurge
It's the lonesome traveller's rotgut or bacteria's revenge
The great plastic spectacular descendant of Stonehenge
And the people come to worship on their death-defying wheels
Fancy-dressed as shovels for their death-defying meals
It's the Watford Gap, Watford Gap
A plate of grease and a load of crap"

I can't remember who said it, or even what board it was on, but somebody once said that the ending of C50 was like "grabbing defeat from the mouth of victory". I thought that was a great line. It basically sums up their  whole career if you think about it.

Jay, could it have been this?

Nope, it was a post that was specifically about the ending of C50, and the stupidity of something so great ending so abruptly. Whoever it was, was basically making a point of how the group seems to literally go out of their way to mess up a good thing.

I'm reading a LONG biography of Winston Churchill , "The Last Lion," by William Manchester. Took me over an hour to read the Preamble and according to my e-reader will take me over two hours to read the Prologue! It's over 3 000 pages total but so far it's engaging.

This quote is probably familiar but I needed a good laugh today and this did the trick:

Conversation Churchill had with Lady Astor:
Lady Astor - "Winston, if I were your wife I'd poison your soup."
Churchill - "Nancy, if I were your husband, I'd drink it."

Yes, it's 3 volumes, 1000 pages each.
When I finish that, I'll attempt to tackle Robert Caro's bio of President Lyndon Johnson. It's 4 volumes so far, 1000 or so pages each, and he's not finished! Caro's well into his 80s now so hope he finishes.
By then, hope Lewinsohn's second volume on the Beatles will be finally out :-)

Guess I should add another quote.
Back in 1965 , Hurricane Betsy did a lot of damage in New Orleans and parts of the city were flooded. Mayor Victor Schiro, assessing the situation, made this immortal quote:
"Don't believe any false rumors unless they come from me."
