My favorite part (and by favorite part, I mean least favorite) is Bruce stopping everything he's doing (which, you know, is quite a lot) to turn around and say "NOONAN PONTIAC!" while on stage mid-song to the camera.

Funniest parts of this bizarro commercial:

- Mike and Bruce couldn't even start their "We're going to Noonan Pontiac" schpeel on time together... Mike missed his cue and started late, but they didn't even do another take  LOL

- Gotta love how at the end of a commercial featuring Mike, Noonan Pontiac is shown to be on "Van Dyke" Road.

This reminds me of one of the cheapie local commercials that were airing during UHF broadcasts of Hot Seat With Wally George in the 1980s.

That same point about "Van Dyke" Road hit me too.  LOL  Oh, the irony.

Also thinking about the kitschy joys of growing up in the late 70's and 80's pre-cable and seeing all those low-budget UHF station based commercials.

In Philly we had two that ran incessantly...one was "Aron's King Of Mattresses" which was a guy dressed in a king costume who did the commercial while jumping up and down on a mattress. The other was for a diamond retailer which featured the Dovells singing "Rockin Robin" with the diamond guys surrounded by women wearing the jewelry, and the catch phrase was that one of the owners had a diamond in his beard...and the bass singer would sing "and Jerry's got a diamond in his beard"  as the camera zoomed in on Jerry and his diamond-studded beard.

I digress.

Nice to see the "Beach Boys" weren't above scoring a few Ben Franklins for this campaign... Roll Eyes

This commercial never fails to make me laugh out loud... I love it, in a totally cringe kinda way... Like the spoken intro on the Nascar CD... So awful, it kinda brings a smile to your face LOL

I honestly don't think something like this has any real impact on the band's legacy. One local commercial from the early 2000's is just a blip on the radar.

I agree about the blip thing. Yet it's more about the sum total of a million blips that add up to something larger.

That said, I just laugh at the silliness of this commercial. It doesn't make me mad in the slightest, but I do feel that it's way, waaaay beneath what this band should be associated with.

Wow, that video of the raw footage is great insight to what the group was like at the time... And Bruce bowing at the intro of California Girls; he was at his corniest in this era.

Sums up what is wrong with Mike's vision for the band - ie. Never mind the legacy, let's make a few bucks.

Oh, and the company no longer trades.

In addition to that raw footage, that same YouTube user named, wait for it, Kendal Noonan, has posted a couple more final edits of alternate commercials (weirdly, the final edit of that first commercial in the first post doesn't appear to be among the videos posted by Noonan). It appears Mike and Bruce did indeed go down to the dealership at some point to shoot additional material. Also worth noting is that the intros on these videos provide a solid date for the period of time they were shot: September of 1999 (interestingly only less than two months after David Marks left the band). Here are the two alternate commercial edits:

At least Mike and Bruce posed in front of a classic car (looks like a GTO or similar) that was sitting in the dealership showroom.

At least I'll give them that, it'd have been embarrassing for them to have posed in front of 1999 Pontiac product.
Pontiac Grand Prix? More like Grandpa Prix!

Notes:

- Mike looks like he's protecting his twig & berries in that dealership shot.

- Why does Bruce awkwardly laugh when the lady tells him he played a great show? I guess it's him being modest, but it comes off like he doesn't believe either her or the sentiment.

- What is that wretched wannabe Beach Boys music that's playing? Is that some Adrian Baker soundalike stuff? Or just generic library copycat "surf" music?

The commercial was shot on Sept 2. 1999. After they said they are going to the dealership it would have been hilarious if she had have replied  ‘So you’re buying Al Jardine a Pontiac for his birthday tomorrow’?’   Wink

 LOL

This is basically Mike & Bruce's version of Eastbound and Down's Kenny Powers and the KIA dealership debacle:

Let us not forget Mike's epic early 80s radio jingles/commercials for Hyatt Regency:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRkY5sW5rEc

"Hi, this is Mike Love of the Beach Boys, and I wish YOU were here....."

A few years ago, someone posted higher quality recordings of even *more* variations of these Hyatt Regency ads, but I think they were deleted when the epic BB channel on YouTube was terminated. One of many bummers.

If that was his corniest how do you explain the last 20 years ? He’s the most accomplished musician in Mikes band by far and he’s coasted unbelievably like an amateur cover band member .
