My son was playing this yesterday on Spotify while we ate. It's one of my favourite Eno albums.

Yes! Love this one too.

If anyone here is on Apple Music who loves ambient, they have a regularly updated playlist called "Pure Ambient" that is FULL of great ambient tunes. Perfect for a rainy day or relaxing evening reading.

Talking of Eno, this atmospheric and extremely moving modern "classical" work by Gavin Bryars was originally released on Eno's Obscure label. This first (1975) version of The Sinking of the Titanic is the one I've posted.

And on the other side of that 1975 Obscure release is another Gavin Bryars composition. Anyone unmoved by Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet must have a heart of stone:

I'd been looking for this ever since hearing an excerpt from it a couple of years back. Simeon ten Holt's Canto Ostinato is traditionally performed on four pianos but I find all that pianistic activity too abrasive. (Maybe this derives from my years training in vain to become a piano tuner, a job a lot closer to science than to music.) So I was overjoyed to discover this version for multi-tracked marimba, although for a while there was only an ad for it on YouTube. Now you can hear seven major sections uploaded by the performer, the Dutch percussionist Peter Elbertse. Section 88 gives you a nice big chunk to digest. I love the sound of the marimba! Roll Eyes

Here's how this 74-minute version starts: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSVUvK82N18

Many years ago I bought a book called The Ambient Century: From Mahler to Moby by Mark Prendergast. I then bought a dozen albums in a matter of weeks on the strength of what I'd read. One was Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works Volume II. I had disc one playing on the stereo last night as I sat out on the terrace, the sparse ambient sounds mixing naturally with the hum of the local traffic and other outdoor noises...

A sublime track from world-class guitarist Robert Fripp. "The Cathedral of Tears" comes from 1995's A Blessing of Tears, a memorial to Fripp's mother Edith, who died in 1993. This is about as close as music comes to the sound of sobbing.

George Michael's song "It Doesn't Really Matter" fits thread. It played in radio: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5MEaPhvKRGY
Really liked it back as teenager in 2005 (mother's got cassette to entire album Older but she doesn't like this song, she likes title track & song about Jesus Christ which is popular choices to like in the album, interestingly. I.e. I dislike them). I especially liked the imagery when listening to it & then it playing in brains - everybody in sepia color, in slow motion, get together, take hands to create circle & walk clockwise & everybody's friend etc. Super-idyllic picture, ha. Shan't say dislike it today but, definitely don't listen to it deliberately - 90s music isn't cup of tea, there's better-cooler 60s music to play. 3D

This afternoon on Dutch radio I heard Maya Fridman's performance of Michael Gordon's Light Is Calling (2004) for cello and electronics:

Here's something I bumped into by sheer chance on YouTube last night. The blurb explains it well, and you might like to check out some of the often very imaginative comments. This dreamy album suits both the low-key Christmas mood this year and my own contemplative mood right now:
