Disclaimer: What you see isn’t perfect thread title. Would be useful if smb. English-friendly advised apt title.

This is interesting topic, looks like. You listen to songs by different people & hear many interestingly structured/ lined-up songs. F.ex., I deem it really cool when song starts with, say, melody, next hi-hats start, next bass is joined etc. till everything else simultaneously. I’d like people bring songs with such steps. To begin & to give idea,

Nice idea, RR. The title's fine--the important thing is everyone knows what you mean. Wink

Captain Beefheart's "I'm Gonna Booglarize You, Baby" is the one I thought of first because of your mention of hi-hats.

1 - Guitar I (funky rhythm)
2 - Guitar 2 (slashes)
3 - Bass joins guitar 2
4 - Hi-hat, possibly snare
5 - Vocals

ISAAC HAYES' skills as a composer/arranger brought this concept to a high artistic place:

Perhaps "Pass the Hatchet" by Roger and the Gypsies?

If I understand what RangeRover is saying correctly, these are usually called layered openings.

Tons of great examples. One of my favorites:

A lot of the records that Norman Whitfield produced by The Temptations are like that. Probably the most well known is "Papa Was A Rolling Stone".

If you mean parts that enter in succession I agree. Maybe it's my cloth ears but I don't hear that in "YATSOML"...

Here's a sterling example of what I think RR means: it's the title track from Robert Fripp's 1979 solo album Exposure.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzFsDQeTUT4

The successive entries are as follows:

1) Guitar tremolo
2) Spoken text (J.G. Bennett)
3) Drums
4) Guitar loops ("Frippertronics")
5) Bass and "XPOSURE" spelled out by Fripp and Eno
6) Piano
7) Rhythm guitar
6) Title screeched by Terre Roche

This is off topic, but I never noticed the  similarity of the beginning to "WATSOML", and then beginning of Dennis's "You And I".

In YATSOML, the layering includes the vocals.

1. Keyboard and drums
2. Male vocals
3. Female vocals and background singers
3. Stevie Wonder and trumpets

One of the most well done song openings ever IMO.

2SBonilla - cool info, will check that link when youtube's fast in the evening.
SBonilla, checked the Isaak Hayes link, it says "Not available in your country". Could you bring different link with it? Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't catch layers in "Sunshine" either if SA didn't explain - it's difficult to do in this specific song.

I do not know what link to put here. Search for "Isaac Hayes shaft" in youtube and see works in your territory.

You know, I had no idea that was another singer on those first two lines! Cloth ears, you see. And I've never looked at the wiki page. It's Jim Gilstrap of "Swing Your Daddy" fame (followed up by Lani Groves).

That's a stroke of absolute genius! There's one other song I can think of right now where the first verse is sung by someone other than the principal singer. Brian May does that on his composition "Who Wants To Live Forever". It's chill's-down-the-spinesville when Freddie takes over for verse two--my goodness. Shocked

In a way, it does. Smiley

So does this, in a way. It's "The Intro And The Outro" by The Bonzo Dog Band:

"Frikadelki TV" by St. Petersburg band Soup Chic (pun at "supchik", diminutive in Russian to "sup"="soup").

Slap bass joined by piano, it joined by bass, it joined by drums, it joined by banjo, it joined by acoustic guitar, it joined by tambourine, it joined by whistles, it joined by harmonica, it joined by tube, it joined by canon singing vocs.

That sounds like a classic example. Pity it's not on YouTube--at least I couldn't find it, even in Russian. Sad

It suits this thread. Thanks. Incidentally, that band never been favorite. I find their songs really abrasive, ear-attacking, singer's voice very not my cup of tea.
