Hi -- this my first new thread ever -- anyway, since we are in the midst of the holiday season, I was wondering what folks' favorite non-BBs Christmas albums are. I guess I'm asking here, because well, my opinion is, if you're a BB/BW fan, you likely have good taste in music all around, and I wouldn't mind expanding my collection with some outtasight Christmas recommendations.

Just for the record, here are my top three:

1. Johnny Mathis "Merry Christmas"
2. Bing Crosby "White Christmas"
3. Trans-Siberian Orchestra "The Lost Christmas Eve"

Thanks in advance for your help!

Thanks for the recs! I actually heard some Carpenters' Christmas music recently and was blown away by how pretty it was. I will definitely check these out.

Well, Elvis' first Christmas album is great and a classic (the second one is ok, but not great). Also Phil Spector's "A Christmas git for you" and "In the Christmas spirit" by Booker T & The MG's. Then there's of course "The Dean Martin Christmas album". The Everly Brothers' album would be pretty good if the recording was better, but as it is unfortunately it falls short imo. Johnny Cash recorded a couple of Christmas albums that were not too bad. His last one, "Country Christmas" from 1993, features the classic holiday songs while his first one features original material IIRC.

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

Well, Elvis' first Christmas album is great and a classic (the second one is ok, but not great).

When I was first getting into Elvis it was recommended that I pick up Christmas Peace. Since then, it's probably my most listened to Christmas album. There are only a few songs/albums that I've come to listen to every year - without exception. Christmas Peace is one of those.

I just had a look on the tracklist. Certainly a very good compilation for Christmas. It features both albums (though the first one not in correct running order) and a second disc with some of his gospel recordings throughout his career. Really nice.

Aside from the BBs and Phil Spector albums, and I can't leave out A Charlie Brown Christmas either, my top Christmas records are:

1. Johnny Mathis
2. She & Him
3. Brian Setzer

My LEAST favorite is Barbra Streisand. Her "Jingle Bells" gives me the fits.

Micheal Buble
Bing Crosby
Charlie Brown

And there are several albums of traditional Christmas carols that are my favorites. I prefer those over contemporary pop Christmas songs.

RangeRover - kudos for liking both the Carpenters and Spike Jones Christmas albums!  You have excellent taste, aside from your dislike for "When Girls Get Together"!  LOL!!!

Muppets and John Denver did a great Christmas album, including "Little St. Nick"!

The Kingston Trio had a great one as well.

And Sinatra is always tremendous, you can't go wrong with that voice...

Wow, thanks everyone!  Cheesy The ones from your selections that seem to pique my interest most are Elvis, Phil Spector, and John Denver. Another one I enjoy that I forgot to mention is "Christmas with Mario Lanza."

As Christmas rolls inexorably closer, time to add my own choice of favourite Yuletide album. It's Berlioz's L'enfance du Christ under Sir Colin Davis, with "L'adieu des bergers" (The shepherds' farewell) as its absolute peak:

A newer album that has come out since I last responded is JD McPherson's Socks. What a fun album! I highly recommend it.

Thanks, GH. I'll check it out.  Wink

I've been lending an ear to a cool Christmas album by Johnny Mathis:

I would also add "Christmas Caravan" by Squirrel Nut Zippers and "Christmas" by Low.

Anyone following Brian Wilson will know of Phil Spector’s  “A Christmas Gift for You”.

Fans of the Beatles might like “The Fab Four: Hark!”  which is “20 classic Christmas songs performed in a Beatles style”.  Pretty funny!

And “Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker” with London philharmonic orchestra is classic!

Yes indeed. Wonderful heart-warming stuff. Old Tsch. pulls it off yet again!

Any particular conductor in mind, m?

I've loved these four Christmas motets by Francis Poulenc ever since rehearsing them with a choir (as a pianist, I should add):

Harry Belafonte's "To wish you a merry Christmas" is a very good Christmas record. It uses traditional Christmas songs from different cultures.

Not a Christmas album and don’t know if it was ever recorded on a record, but I just heard online The Monkees singing Riu Chiu.
A cappella. Excellent blend.
The folk group I was in sang this song, same arrangement, every Christmas season. I believe it was popular in folk music circles back in the 60s.
