Like most of fans, I tried my hands at SMiLE mixes over the years (and i'll probably continue 'til I old and gray!). This is my most recent update on my mix, made from strictly FLAC sources when possible, edited to mono via Audacity and following the classic "America/Elements-no more than 12 tracks" template. So if you're looking for an far-out, crazy experiment mix, I guess this mix isn't for you. There are plenty of great fan mixes out there (Pocket Symphony, SMiLE AD,etc.) if you seek something like this.

My personal mix is made like any classic 60s albums, with banded tracks. Thematically, it's 2 movements ("Americana, The Past" & "The Present, The Elements and The Future") with one on each sides. It also feature (most prominently in "The Elements") humor skits from "the Psychedelic Sounds" recordings.

Happy listening! 3D

Side A (21:11) Americana, The Past

(Intro:Prayer)
1. Heroes & Villians
-Pt1 & 2 - 6 min original single edit based on the "Early Version Outtake Sections" vintage mixes compilation on the Smile Sessions

2. Do You Like Worms
-From The Smile Sessions mixed with SMiLE AD vocals from 2004 version+additional Bicycle Rider chorus vocals from SOT 17 boot

3. Im' In Great Shape
-The "Barnyard Suite" goes like this: Great Shape+Barnyard+I Wanna Be Around(mixed with "Swedish Frog" vocals)+ Friday Night

4. Wonderful
-From The Smile Sessions. I think the song fits perfectly here and gives breathing room between 2 weird collage-like short songs.

5. The Old Master Painter
-From The Smile Sessions + restored vintage mono mix from SOT 17

6. Cabin Essence
-From The Smile Sessions

Side B (20:45) The Present, The Elements and The Future

1. Good Vibrations
- Endless Harmony DCC Mix

2. Vega-Tables
- From The Smile Sessions + Vegetables Arguments mixed with fade

3. Wind Chimes
- 30 years of GV Box+ The Smile Sessions Psychedelic Sounds mixed with tag

4. The Elements
- Fire: Mrs. O' Leary's Cow - SOT 17 mono mixed with SMiLE AD Vocals
- Water: I Love To Say Da-Da - 30 years of GV Box mixed with The Smile Sessions Psychedelic Sounds

5. Child Is Father Of The Man
- From The Smile Sessions edited to full 3 min song as vintage Brian Wilson mixes.

6. Surf's Up
-From The Smile Sessions + Bruiteur Mix + George Fell Into His French Horn
(Outro:Prayer reprise)

Enjoyed your mix.  Heroes was excellent, I've always thought the mixed Brian/Mike vocal on the verses was better than the Brian only.  Sounds more . . . commercial.  I wasn't too sure about repeating "my children were raised" but then I thought . . . why not?  It becomes a "chorus" of sorts, in a song without a chorus.  The Heroes "bridge" (and eventual chorus on the single) works fine as a tag.

Worms is the best approximation of what the song would have been if it were finished - leaving aside the question of whether the BWPS 2004 verse melody is vintage vs. the one Brian sings on the Smile sessions during instrumental tracking.  I particularly liked the reprise of the Rock, Rock, Roll after the Hawaiian section.  I would love to hear this same version in stereo!!

The Swedish Frog vocals work surprisingly well over I Wanna Be Around - and I have to think Brian would have put something on top of the track as he rarely left a bare bones instrumental track stand alone without adding some vocals.

The Vegetables argument goes pretty well over the Fade but I hate hearing the brilliance of the Fade partially obscured by the argument - it may be the most brilliant piece of music Brian created for Smile (despite it being a retread of one of the Heroes and Villains "sections").

Wind Chimes - the three part version you use is likely the one Brian intended for Smile in 66, so I like that you used it, but here I don't think the Psychedelic sounds material really fits over the tag.  Same goes for Da-Da and George Fell over Surf's Up. I tend to think that some of these comedy bits, if they were to be used at all, would have been between tracks or intros to tracks.

anyway, excellent job.  Can you get to work on a stereo version?

Thanks for the kind comments, Bicycle Rider. Im' sorry you don't like the Psychedelic Sounds over a few of the tracks. In my mind, I think Brian would have used humor on the record as something similar to Jan & Dean's Filet of Soul or The Appletree Theatre's Playback (check it out if you haven't, I think it's a really nice psych LP: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lwdk5C3d97M).

The idea for the reprise of "My children were raised" in H & V came when I took the differents heroes chants from pt 2 as a kind of solo (a "vocal" solo if you will instead of a guitar solo) before ending the song with the reprise. Now the children are not "often" wise as they were at the start of the song. They became "healthy and wise".

Also, I personally think "Wonderful" works great in the Americana section, being a kind of a metaphorical song about the rape on the "indian" land (the "non-believer" being the white man). This is why I kept it in the "Past" movement.

Im' swamped with my new job right at the moment, but one day i'll get to a stereo mix somehow!

SydBarrett, i'll see what I can do about it. Cheers!

Wow! I love the stitchwork in Heroes and Villains-- definitely going to have this on repeat! I'm very much on board with your version including comedy bits too-- I think there was a world where the album had a psychodelic mashup feel and those comedy bits could definitely have played a part! (Think: A day in the life). Can you make these downloadable as mp3s somehow?
