Despite my extreme fandom this is something I've never been clear on.  "He went to h.e.l.p. and got some sandals new"... was this a store of some sort?  Or a stand at the farmer's market at Fairfax and Third?

COMMENT to Shane: H.E.L.P. Restaurant was a popular organic-vegetarian restaurant located in Los Angeles on 3rd St. by Fairfax Ave. in Los Angeles in the late 1960s and 1970s.  It was owned by Warren Stagg who introduced many American meditators, such as Mike Love to this style of eating, through his restaurant. Warren plays the waiter in this scene from the 1973 movie "Blume in Love."  ~swd

Looks like there's now a Whole Foods Market on Fairfax and Third.

For what it's worth, when the band did "Take A Load Off Your Feet" at that small number of long shows with extended setlists in late 1993 promoting the GV boxed set (which ironically did *not* include "Feet"), Al subbed in the line "He got some Birkenstock sandals", at least on the several recordings I've heard.

Was H.E.L.P. an actual proper acronym that stood for something?

Or more of a reverse-engineered acronym where they had a word (H.E.L.P.) they wanted to use, and tried to shoehorn words to make the acronym read H.E.L.P.?

Ah, that sounds about right. I suppose H.E.L.L. would be reserved for listening to the autotuned Rhonda on Unleash the Love  LOL

The band quotes this reverse acronym in the background lyrics towards the end of the song (which I refer to as "The Enema Song", for obvious reasons...).

They really should have called it "The Enema Song" and released it as a single.

LOL That must be the single most WTF lyric in their entire catalog, even if it is just them calling things (that are an unfortunate part of life) like they were... but eesh. I wonder if anyone in the band had to be talked into singing that word.
