Had To Phone Ya

This was one of those songs that I skipped over on 15 Big Ones. Never cared for it. Listened to it fully the other day, now I’m obsessed with it. It’s stuck in my head. I love how all five members of the band take turns on lead vocal.
Thoughts on the song?

Except for the drums, that one was recorded "live" with violins and everything (Dennis overdubbed his drums later). As such, it's got the classic BW production touch, to me at least. Same with "Just Once In My Life" from that same set - I know others dislike the Boys' version of that song, but it gives me goosebumps.

Hearing the instrumental tracks were a revelation for me.
Actually if the vocals were better the album would’ve been looked at in a higher light.

I think it's probably one of the 10-15 best songs the band ever did after the
Surf's Up
album. The track is amazing. Billy is right: better vocals would have made a huge difference (not that it's the only '70s track where a person could say that).

Me too c-man. I've always thought JOIML was the best thing on the LP.

It's an underrated song for sure, jaunty yet vulnerable at the same time (and you can say that about a lot of the catalog.)
The Honeys version is also worth a listen:
