Well, I've dug through some of my old stuff --
The tinkly thing isn't on the basic track, so it got overdubbed I guess. Sounds like it could be with the trumpets. I also noted:
"Take 7 is master take, but they did several takes doing a pickup into the cello section leading into the CitFotM sequence. Sounds like Lockert is engineering--Brian is there but not super talkative. Vescovo switches from Banjo to 12-string electric. Bass and Drums sound nearly platonically ideal here. Tape ends with pickups for Friends"

Oh neat, I'd always wondered where that edit was hidden. The original mix has the trumpets over on the right and the tinkly thing on the left, so I'm thinking it may have been allocated to the same track as the cellos. And those drums and bass do sound perfect.
I remember Alan and Mark saying Brian was pretty much in charge of that session, if he wasn't too talkative do you remember how much input Dennis had next to him?

Probably Craig -- this batch of notes was pretty desperate and rushed to get everything down. I have another, more relaxed note on it somewhere else but I'm still looking for that,

What I recall is that Brian was more talkative/involved than Dennis. Both were definitely present, though.

That production / arrangement is so Brian through and through, and so integral to the recording, that I kind of consider it to be an unofficial (and arguably the quintessential) Dennis / Brian Collab.
I'm sure it's been discussed, but Dennis was seemingly *obsessed* with Child is Father of the Man. I can immediately think of at least three of his songs that quoted it musically: this one, Time off POB, and Away from the recent Wake the World set!

Sure, but I wouldn't be surprised to learn that Dennis lobbied for its inclusion. He always seemed very fond of that track, and kept revisiting it! He also gave the press possibly the only contemporaneous quote about CITFOTM during the making of Smile, at least other than Brian.
