It's probably important to remember that in 1995/96 when the S&S sessions took place, the band was still regularly touring and were presumably fitting the sessions in between tour dates/legs.
If you look at the "Nashville Sounds" DVD, Carl isn't present at some of the sessions. That may or may not have been for scheduling reasons.
But I would imagine the BBs didn't have super heavy participation in the S&S sessions. The backing tracks were cut by Joe Thomas's session guys for the most part, and then the BBs (or at least *some* of the BBs) would work on songs with the artists in question (and maybe sometimes separately, at least partly?) on the vocal sessions.
So I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't have a ton of free time *while in Nashville* to work on other artists' projects. And, they may not have wanted to just sit in and sing on every random person's session who asked (not that the S&S roster of artists was exactly an all-time A-list extravaganza either).
I met Mike, Al & Bruce right after the Kathy Troccoli single came out. I had the cassette single on me. It was the only Beach Boys product I had with me. I asked them to sign it. Al seemed surprised by it. Bruce asked me if it was a bootleg and who that hot girl was on the cover. I had to tell both of them it was from their new album. It was very odd. Later when Nashville Sounds came out with all of them in the room singing I Can Hear Music with Kathy, it made me think that who video was staged.
WTF? That's a bit crazy, isn't it?
It was weird, but Al and Bruce were very cordial. I talked to Bruce at a bar for probably 10 minutes. Mike walked in and he called him over and showed him the single. Mike took it, didn't say a word and didn't look at me. He signed it and walked away.

Speaking of Kathy Troccoli's performance, does anyone know where the accoustic version that we can find on one of the "Get the boot" CDs come from? I think there was also another version. Was that a radio performance or something similar? And is there more?

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

On a VHS tape somewhere I have a recording of them performing this on the Regis and Kathy Lee show. As I remember it, it was Mike, Al, Carl, Bruce & Matt with Kathy and Carl or Carl and Al playing an acoustic guitar and Bruce on Piano. I remember Al saying that Kathy "Has the hit off the record," or something like that, then they played the song. I searched youtube but couldn't find it. Here is a picture on pinterest:

I remember seeing the Regis and Kathie Lee performance but I know I saw it on YouTube. I didn't see the original telecast. It was as you said with Carl on acoustic guitar and Bruce on piano. Sounds pretty good too and they had some conversation about it after the song was done. Then they broke into a quick version of Kokomo

Yes, it used to be on youtube. I saw it that way, too. But is this really the same performance as on "Get the boot"? There was a second one on the bootleg IIRC

Always thought it was kind of strange that Carl is very prominent on the background vocals for I Can Hear Music, in fact, the most prominent Beach Boy by far, yet he is absent from the video and the recording session. Just seemed a bit odd to me.

IIRC the credits in the booklet show that Carl wasn't on a couple of songs. Interestingly he is credited for "Warmth of the sun" but isn't in the video. So, the vocals of the Boys were probably recorded over a periode of time on at least some tunes. You can also see Brian in a solo spot on "Don't worry baby" which certainly was recorded at a different time than the Boys' vocals. And this seems to be the case for "In my room" as well. That's why they have a Brian solo track without the other Beach Boys, I guess, they were probably supposed (and did so - see the DVD) add their vocals to that track.
