Interesting little article, in which Mike discusses not being able to get much time in on his board...only occasionally these days!

Does anybody else kinda feel like "Bill Jackson" is a bullshit name made up to describe a person that doesn't exist in a situation that never happened?

Also, does Mike actually surf? The way he hobbles around, I can't see him surfing.

Reading between the lines, it looks to me like the reporter, in ignorance, asked Mike if he still surfed.

Do they have surfing 'viagra'?  He'd need it in order to 'get up' on that board.   LOL  And let us not forget for one fleeting moment that it was Denny who was the surfer in the band.  Then along came Bruce...and there were 2 of 'em. Cool Guy

I'd say, #1, we don't know what the reporter specifically asked that elicited Mike's responses, and #2, I don't think it's crazy to ask him if he still surfs. He confirmed in the article that he occasionally in fact does try.

Mike has touted his (undeniably impressive) physical fitness for his age in various interviews. Also, I believe Bruce has described in very recent years online still surfing, right?

Don't get me wrong, surfing is not a topic *I'd* ask Mike in an interview, but frankly even that question is less redundant than the typical ten-thumbs-up local beat writer or morning drive DJ asking Mike a softball "How is it you're still so awesome and popular?" type of question. Or "Why do you think your music is still popular?", etc.

I have searched long and hard for evidence of Bill Jackson on these boards and others. It's one of teh two big questions that have still gone unanswered. The other being why Brian was able to participate on the Spanish Kokomo version-was Landy a co-writer or producer? Anyway, the quest for Bill continues. From Wikipedia:

The lyrics to the song, originally entitled "Rendezvous", were inspired after a day Mike Love had spent at the beach in which he had gone surfing with an old friend named Bill Jackson.[3]

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

Imagine a documentary called 'Searching For Bill Jackson' where after an exhaustive journey, they find him in a secluded hut in Hawaii. He pulls out a bunch of old footage of Mike riding perfect 10's, and it ends up Mike is a huge Kahuna. 3D

And production aside, I’d so much rather hear a 14 year old David Marks shred some guitar on Chug-a-lug than hear a 51 year old Mike Love sing about bangin some chick in a swimming pool.-rab2591

The '68 promo film for Do It Again is a good reference of which Beach Boys actually know how to surf. In it you see three surfers catching waves one is a non-Beach Boy (wearing half wet suit), one is Bruce (dark shorts), one is Dennis (white shorts). Mike? No.

The thing about the heroin thing is that i actually believe carl about the drinks and pills being why he was so bad. The way he was is actually way more like that than someone on heroin.  I'm sure they did/bought heroin on that tour, but as for the infamous show(s) its actually more believable he was on pills/drunk because thats exactly what would happen to you.

Valium completely makes alcohol stronger. So 2 drinks would make it feel like 6 drinks, which is what he sounded like. I've never seen anyone on heroin slurring his words like that.

He almost did it, but then realized that he didn't wear his wet suit. Next time  Grin

Jon, I wondered if you could answer this: When did Dennis stop surfing? I imagine that he wasn't doing it during his last year alive (maybe I'm wrong).
Oh, and do we know who the non-Beach Boy in that clip is?

Have you read the Steven Gaines "Heroes and Villians" book? It contains seemingly more or less verbatim transcripts of some of the conversations the band had with management, etc. The strong implication (can't remember if Pamplin confirmed or not on this board when he was posting here) was that someone literally recorded the conversation.

In any event, while I don't recall that Carl literally says he (Carl) took heroin, he was clearly having a unique episode across the shows on that tour.

But frankly, even if he only "took pills" and drank, that was just as unprofessional. It wasn't something he regularly did (though recordings going all the way back to late 1976/early 1977 show him slurring due to presumably drinking). But he still seemed (again, quite understandably) cagey when addressing what was going on. I'm sure NOBODY in those 1978 Australia press conferences wanted Carl to tell the media that Brian and Dennis were diving into a big bag of heroin.

I don't even mind Mike bringing up the Australia '78 heroin stuff. I just think he lacks any empathy or context for presenting the story. Whenever he talks about the Wilson brothers and their substance abuse issues, it's always with a "they f**ed up and I didn't" attitude.
