IMO, there are a handful of BB tunes where the live version is better than the studio. IMO, "Aren't You Glad" live blows away the studio version. Any others?

I think the live version of Funky Pretty is a lot funkier than the studio version.

Neither version is among my favorites (the song is kind of a rewrite of "Takin' Care of Business"), but a good example of a live version being better than the limp, languid studio version is "Keepin' the Summer Alive."

I'd also say the Carl Wilson 1981 live gigs feature more lively, interesting versions of his '81 solo album tracks than the actual studio album. Similar to KTSA, the '81 solo studio album is kind of limp and sterile.

I despise the train wreck of the Summer In Paradise album but don't mind the live version of the song.

Totally agree re Aren't You Glad. The Live in London version is wonderful. I'd also nominate Let The Wind Blow live '73, and also (perhaps more controversially?) Don't Worry Baby.

I think most of those are great live versions, but few actually literally better the studio counterpart.
Another that does is "It's About Time", but actually the live 1973 version from "Made in California" that smokes both the original studio version and any 1970 live version.

"Aren't You glad" is the clear cut one. Outstanding performance and the horns kick it over the top. After that I think of only maybe "Leaving This Town."

I'd also like to mention the wonderful Live in London version of Aren't You Glad. Al's voice is particularly great on that track imo.
Also Carl's live arrangement of Heroes & Villains, especially the Ricky and Blondie years, is phenomenal. If recorded this way it almost sounds like it could have commercial potential, something that the original single lacks in part. And although I wouldn't wanna call it better than the studio version, it definitely stands on it's own. (BTW I also love the live performances of the song with Brian in Hawaii in '67. What the guys could pull off on stage with just 5 people is impressive.)

I'm a huge fan of the In Concert album but I definitely prefer the studio version of Funky Pretty over the live recording. On the live album it just sounds like a regular rock song (although a good one), while the studio rendition has all these amazing things going on, especially synth-wise - this is where the Switched-On Bach influence really came through.

Beginning with Live in London, I think all of Carl's live performances of "Darlin'" are rocking more than the excellent studio version.

To me, the '67 "Darlin'" and subsequent live versions (especially the circa 1980 version that turned it more into a pop/rock song than an R&B-infused funky, slower number) are almost like separate songs. I love both, but they're so different. A bit like the live 70s versions of H&V versus the '67 studio version.

Yeah, puts the studio cut in the shade. Part of it is he just became a better singer as time went on.

"Darlin'" is cooler as fast song. The less "funky", the better. R&b isn't favorite genre in music.

It's interesting that by the 90s, still in the Carl era, they slowed down "Darlin'" quite a bit and did it somewhat more like the original recording, and it sounded pretty limp and waaaay too slow (cheesy 90s keyboards didn't help either). That was of course the case for a number of songs in the 90s setlist. Some performances from the mid-late 90s especially of stuff like "Catch a Wave" are distractingly slowed down.
I remember all the way back to the 1981 syndicated "20th Anniversary Special", which was the first place where some Knebworth '80 footage was used, thinking that that performance of "Darlin'" was quite good. Spunky, some good guitar, and a nice Carl lead. I was surprised to see it singled out for inclusion 17 years later on the 1998 "Endless Harmony Soundtrack."
