I completely missed Howie’s post ( or forgotten about it)... definitely explains a lot. Never have been impressed with his production “ability “

Service got shut off today because I was behind on my bill. I’d forgotten how much I hate local radio

Really enjoyed hearing a live version of let the wind blow that I hadn’t heard before. I have to deal with hellacious traffic everyday and this station has made me actually look forward to my commute. The power of The Beach Boys....

A couple other slightly interesting/weird things I caught in the last day or so: Ron Wilson's "As Tears Go By" (apologies if that was already mentioned by someone else), and it looks like they're dipping into additional "grey" market live BB releases, as this morning they played "Lady Lynda" from 7/4/81 Carl-less live show release.

Pretty much every "grey" live release they've played has been off-speed. The Carl "Bottom Line" show runs too slow, and the 7/4/81 show runs too fast. This is the fault of the original CD releases of course. Man, those grey releases literally just plopped some old off-air cassette onto a CD.

I believe he did a top 10 countdown. Heard him introducing a BB Today ballad and talking about it as a precursor to Pet Sounds.

Yeah, I remember Schwartzman has been a Beach Boys fan for a long, long while. I can remember reading an interview with him in like 2004 or so, where he was talking about the greatness of the group from like Smiley through 20/20 or something of that nature, which I thought was cool, because this was still before Brian had released BWPS and so obviously a bit before it started to become a bit more "mainstream" to dig the mid-period Beach Boys. So I gotta respect that.

And this is coming from a guy (me) who, though I respect Jason S.'s acting talent (he's been in quite a few great movies like Rushmore and a few others), kinda thinks of him as a super annoying hipster.

I finally borrowed my mom's Sirius XM account info, and installed the app on my iPhone.

WOW.

I may never listen to anything else for the rest of the summer.

Have been at a spiritual retreat over the past week. Left this morning and turned on the BBs station. On the drive home heard some nice quirky things such as Airplane Song, Solar System, Honkin Down the Highway. Played a couple of my favorite songs as a 6-7 year old back in 1964 - Fun Fun Fun and Dead Man's Curve. Heard Al gush over the modulation in Warmth of the Sun. An alternate version of I'm So Young. A guy from The Woodlands, TX (where Al will be performing in a couple of months; wish I could go) requested Guess I'm Dumb.

A wonderful ride home.

SiriusXM, enough with the 45 version of "Cotton Fields!"   LOL

At least play the 20/20 album version or something if you must play this song like 25 times per day.

I don't dislike either version of the song; they're fine. But someone (or some computer algorithm) just really loves specifically playing the GV '93 boxed set mastering of the 45 version of the song.

It was confirmed a little while back that they had started to play XMas stuff, but here's an actual screenshot from today:

As much as I like that song, July is WAY too early for Christmas music, imo.

Well, there is the "Christmas in July" thing that media outlets (and stores) have sometimes tried out going years and years back. Hallmark shows those assembly-line-cookie-cutter Christmas movies of theirs in July.

But I don't even think that's the deal with this Sirius channel. I think they've just slowly rolled out additional items into the rotation (Celebration, grey market live releases, etc.), and they've now moved into Xmas stuff. It seems kinda weird to play the stuff now, but also weird to ignore a chunk of the catalog when they're playing stuff like "Problem Child" and Oak Ridge Boys duets.

Has anybody heard solo XMas stuff yet?

Yesterday around noon I heard:

Hold On Dear Brother
In My Room
Summer's Gone
I'll Keep On Loving You (Ron Wilson)
Long Promised Road
Be True To Your School (45 version, as always - preceded by Marilyn describing how she, Diane and Ginger did the cheerleading chants)
Here She Comes
That's Why God Made The Radio

Pretty wild to hear both Fataar-Chaplin So Tough compositions within 20 minutes of each other! Same with two cuts from TWGMTR.

Has anyone heard them play the *album* version of "Be True to Your School?" They play the 45 version about 87 times per day.

I have to say, the first honest-to-God *full* conversion this channel has done on me so far is hearing the Beckley-Lamm-Wilson track "They're Only Words." That album has always been a snoozefest to me despite Carl's great voice, but on that track not only does Carl sound good, it's a pretty good, catchy song. Sure, it still has too slick of an AOR sort of squeaky clean late 80s/early 90s Chicago power ballad sort of sound (not surprisingly), but it's peppy and has some good chord changes.

It would have been interesting (I guess still could be) to strip the song down and take Carl's vocals and re-do it as a Beach Boys track. Had it been liberated from the overly-slick sound, it could have been a nice Carl cameo on the TWGMTR album, and would undoubtedly sound even better with layered BB vocals.

His daughter, Amber Love. Don't know what it is about her voice, but it kind of feels like nails on a blackboard to me. Not that she sings badly, just sounds like she's really straining on parts, even those that aren't going through auto tune. She just doesn't have a real pleasing voice....IMHO.

She sounds like every female Top 40 artist nowadays. Nothing bad about her voice, it's just very...not unique.
