Don't know if this has been asked before.

What is your five (5) favorite Beach Boys or Beach Boys-related (i.e. solo) songs of each decade? I'll even allow unreleased or previously unreleased tracks. And then what is your favorite album of each decade?

For me -

1960s:
1. 'Wouldn't It Be Nice'
2. 'Let Him Run Wild'
3. 'In The Back Of My Mind'
4. 'The Warmth Of The Sun'
5. 'God Only Knows'

Album: Pet Sounds

1970s:
1. 'This Whole World'
2. 'Surf's Up'
3. 'Wouldn't It Be Nice To Live Again'
4. 'Till I Die'
5. 'The Night Was So Young'

Album: Sunflower

1980s:
1. 'Where I Belong'
2. 'Melt Away'
3. 'It's Gettin' Late'
4. 'There's So Many'
5. 'Love And Mercy'

Album: Brian Wilson (sorry, Beach Boys '85, so close..)

1990s:
1. 'Soul Searchin''
2. 'Orange Crate Art'
3. 'She Says That She Needs Me'
4. 'Imagination'
5. 'Sail Away'

Album: Orange Crate Art, I guess (man, what a pathetic decade for the Boys)

2000s/2010s:
1. 'Southern California'
2. 'Midnight's Another Day'
3. 'One Kind Of Love'
4. 'Summer's Gone'
5. 'Mrs. O'Leary's Cow'

Album: That Lucky Old Sun (yes, I love it more than BWPS. Problem? Smiley)

You're right, Captain, I should've been more clear. Studio albums only. Otherwise, I'd have definitely picked the GV box or the Pet Sounds Sessions box for the '90s and probably the Smile Sessions box for the '00s/'10s (the Smile recordings definitely still count though, whether for the '60s or BWPS for the '00s/'10s.

This was tougher than I thought it would be, especially for the 1980s and '90s. Although I was introduced to the Beach Boys as a kid in the 1980s, my parents listened to the early 1960s stuff almost exclusively during that era. And I've listened to very little of the 1990s stuff. So both of those decades were tough. I had to listen to a lot of YouTube videos to fill in the gaps.

With that said, here we go ...

1960s:
1. Sloop John B
2. Good Vibrations
3. I’m Waiting for the Day
4. Heroes and Villains
5. When I Grow Up (To Be a Man)
Album: Pet Sounds

1970s:
1. Feel Flows
2. Surf’s Up
3. River Song (POB)
4. Til I Die
5. The Night Was So Young
Album: Surf’s Up

1980s:
1. Love & Mercy (BW88)
2. I Do Love You
3. Hold Me (CW81)
4. Melt Away (BW88)
5. Kokomo
Album: Brian Wilson (1988)

1990s:
1. Dream Angel (Imagination)
2. Sail Away (OCA)
3. Lay Down Burden (Imagination)
4. Your Imagination (Imagination)
5. Keep an Eye on Summer (Imagination)
Album: Imagination (Admittedly, I don't listen to much from this era)

2000s:
1. Morning Beat (TLOS)
2. On a Holiday (BWPS)
3. Mrs. O’Leary’s Cow (BWPS)
4. Southern California (TLOS)
5. In Blue Hawaii (BWPS)
Album: Brian Wilson Presents Smile

2010s:
1. Pacific Coast Highway (TWGMR)
2. On the Island (NPP)
3. Nothing But Love (Gershwin)
4. From There and Back Again (TWGMR)
5. Guess You Had to Be There (NPP)
Album: That’s Why God Made the Radio

Thanks. I wish I could split the 1960s in two (early and late) and combine the 1980s and 1990s. That would have made things easier on me. Ha!

Without reading ANY of the other responses...until I'm done...This is really, REALLY difficult.  The first 2 decades?  There are easily dozens of choices.  After that it almost impossible to come up with even 5 unless solo albums are permissible.  Brian and Denny and a track or 2 from Al and Carl solo L.Ps. that is.

60s:  Cabinessence, Good Vibrations, God Only Knows, In My Room, Time to Get Alone.  album:  Pet Sounds [honorable mention ... Little Deuce Coupe.]

70s:  Add Some Music To Your Day, This Whole World, Surf's Up [as that's when it was released], Feel Flows, River Song. L.P.:  Sunflower [h.m.  Surf's Up/Pacific Ocean Blue]

80s:  Sunshine,  Livin' With a Heartache, Melt Away, Somewhere Near Japan, Hold Me.  L.P.:  Brian Wilson   [Hon. mention.  Keepin' The Summer Alive]

90s:  Summer in Monterey, Movies is Magic, Warmth of the Sun/Willie, Caroline No/Timothy B., Remember Walkin in the Sand.  L.P.:  Pet Sounds Box Set  [h.m. Good Vibrations/30 years Box]

21st Century:  Think About the Days, Pacific Coast Highway, Summer's Gone, Don't Fight the Sea, The Last Song.  L.P.:  Both BWPS/The SMiLE Box Set  [Hon. Mention...Made in California]

C'est ca.  Cool Guy
-----------------------

Reading through I see that only studio albums became a 'rule'.  Tough.  I already did my 'thing' and there are decades where NO [studio] ALBUM deserves to be included or...they're not quite as good.  [and I see that suddenly the 1st decade of the 21st century became a 'thing'.  OK...ALL Brian/ALL the Time...although Al in Vegas is a very, VERY good release too.]

@Lee Marshall wow, another 'Livin' With A Heartache' fan! I love that song, I'm glad I'm not alone in that. Great lists overall. Had I made it top 10 for each decade instead of top 5, 'Time To Get Alone' would definitely be on my '60s list. What a gorgeous tune.

Interesting, and difficult! I tried to follow chronological order:

1960s:
Lonely Sea
In My Room
I Just Wasn't Made for These Times
Wind Chimes (the Smiley Smile one)
Time to Get Alone

Album: Smiley Smile

1970s:
A Day in the Life of a Tree
'Til I Die
Surf's Up (from same album)
The Night Was So Young
River Song

Album: Love You

1980's:
Santa Ana Winds
Love and Mercy
Melt Away
Rio Grande
Kokomo (what can I say, it's so catchy!)

Album: BW88

1990s (since I can't skip this, I'll cheat a little):
Fourth of July (GV box)
Fairy Tale Music (GV box)
Still I Dream of It (GV box)
Your Imagination
Lay Down Burden

Album: Imagination

2000's:
Heroes and Villains (BWPS)
Roll Plymouth Rock (BWPS)
Cabin Essence (BWPS)
Live Let Live (TLOS)
Going Home (TLOS)

Album: BWPS (TLOS counting only originals)

2010s:
California Saga: California (from A Postcard from California)
Nothing But Love
From There to Back Again
Pacific Coast Highway
Sail Away (the NPP one, of course)

Album: TWGMTR

A final thought: favourably surprised by being forced to let several really strong songs on the cutting floor for the 2000's and 2010's. Smiley

Wrightfan, since the 90s is so dry and since there are so many great beloved unreleased/previously unreleased songs, plush solo material that stuff definitely counts.

And I wouldn't sue you over including 'Kokomo'; I've made my peace with it, and I kinda have come to enjoy much of it. I'm far more likely to sue you ove 'Getcha Back'. Just kidding. Smiley
