I think the key to really appreciating Smile is to listen to it after a couple drinks.
I've had a couple drinks and this thread inspired me to listen to it, and half the songs completely make tears stream down my eyes. The amount of sentimentality in this album is simply indescribable. I think if Brian had completed this album in 1967, there might have been a rash of suicides of drunk and stoned people jumping off bridges and whatnot while listening to it. So maybe it's a good thing he never really finished it.
No, don't worry I have no desire to jump off any bridges.

Incidentally, I don't know how many people have realized this, but on Surf's Up, the line, "Are you sleeping, Brother John?" is a reference to the French lullaby, "Frère Jacques, Frère Jacque, Dormez-Vous?" The melody of the two lines in the two songs is even the same!

Yeah, and later in the song they sing "I heard the word, Wonderful thing, a children's song." which I take to be another reference to the Frere Jacques thing. I read the following about the song "The song is about a friar who has overslept and is urged to wake up and sound the bell for the matins, the midnight or very early morning prayers for which a monk would be expected to wake." I found this very relevant: "Martine David and A. Marie Delrieu suggest that Frère Jacques might have been created to mock the Dominican monks, known in France as the Jacobin order, for their sloth and comfortable lifestyles."
Van Dyke Parks lyrics for this song are so awesome.

Lots of musical quotes all over Smile. “Long long ago” from Windchimes is another. Not to mention really obvious ones like “you are my sunshine”
