Mar 8, 1962-Brian, Al (who was no longer performing with the group) and Carl went to World Pacific in Hollywood and recorded Barbie and What Is a Young Girl Made Of.  March 10 1962-The BBs played at the Bel Air Bay Club. March 12-16, 1962-Sometime during this “Prom Week” the BBs played a show at Torrance HS. March 16-18, 1962-The BBs performed at the Santa Monica Hotel-with the Vibrants and Bel-Airs

March 10 1963-The BBs played at the KMEN 10th anniversary Party in San Bernardino. Mar 16 1963- The BBs performed at the Hemet Armory. March 10 1964-Brian played keyboards at a Jan and Dean session for “Easy as 1, 2, 3”, “Rocking Little Roadster” and “Barons West LA”. Mar 12 1964-The BBs appeared on The Steve Allen Show in San Diego-Singing Fun, Fun, Fun and Surfin USA.  March 14 1964-The BBs “Lost Concert” was shown in theaters with live footage of the Beatles and of Leslie Gore, creating a unique concert experience for theatergoers.

Keith Badman stated that the BBs footage was filmed on March 14 but a newspaper article from March 10 makes it clear that the footage had been taped the previous week. This of course raises the question of the accuracy of Badman’s statement that the BBs appearance on American Bandstand was taped the same day.  The Bandstand app featured the BBs miming to Don’t Worry Baby and being interviewed by Dick Clark.  It aired on Apr 18.  Carl later expressed displeasure with this appearance.  He told Earl Leaf that, “We learn all the time. Once we went on a filmed Dick Clark TV show without our instruments, dong a lip synch to records. Later when we saw how we looked, we each died a thousand deaths. It was awful. We’ll never do that again”

March 9, 1966-The BBs posed for publicity photos for Teen Magazine-at Pacific Ocean Park-with Brian in checkered pants, Al in striped shirt, and Dennis in jean jacket.  They hired models to pose with the guys at various locations in the park.   The next day there was a tracking session for God Only Knows and then an evening vocal session at Columbia where work was done on God Only Knows, I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times, I’m Waiting For The Day and Wouldn’t It Be Nice. March 11 1966-Brian worked on the track of Here Today and then held an evening vocal session for I’m Waiting For the Day and God Only Knows.  The other BBs, however, had flown to Cleveland to start a tour with Noel Harrison and the Lovin’ Spoonful.  The next day they were at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA. The reviewer was not a fan and accused them of performing badly “a collection of songs that made them famous all over California (until California found out they weren’t so cool and shuffled them over to the east).”  That night Brian worked on the vocals for I’m Waiting For the Day.

March 13 1966 the BBs played in Pittsburgh. Two days later they appeared in Akron, OH, then headed to Canton and Dayton.  On March 18 they played at Fordham College and ended the tour with a show at the Kingston Armory in Wilkes-Barre, PA on the 19th.  A reviewer from the Wilkes-Barre Record noted “the five Californians with one sporting a rust colored beard and wearing a cap, sang and played many of their smash hits.  Included were such numbers as ‘Barbara Ann,’ ‘Help Me Rhonda,’ ‘Little Deuce Coupe,’ ‘I Get Around,’ ‘Papa-oom-mow-mow,’ and a McCartney-Lennon favorite, sung by Dennis, ‘You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away.’”

March 13 1967-The BBs held a vocal session for Carl’s song Tones (Tune X) but the session tapes are lost. More work was done on the song two days later.  March 17 1967 the BBs played at Western Illinois University.  They then played in Davenport, Iowa with Keith, The Casinos and Harper’s Bizarre and appeared in Kansas City on March 19. Nancy Miller of the Kansas City Times noted, “The audience… responded enthusiastically with clapping and spasmodic screams to such songs as ‘Sloop John B,’ ‘Wouldn’t It Be Nice’ and ‘California Girls’ but remained in their seats and left quietly when the show ended.  The Beach Boys are an attractive group with a maximum of talent and stage presence, both of which served them well last night.”

March 13 1968-The BBs worked on the song “Friends” without Mike, who was still in India.  Indeed around this time Italian TV filmed b&w footage of Mike and the Beatles at Rishikesh.  March 18 1968-The BBs worked on When A Man Needs A Woman (listed as Untitled #1).
March 8 and 11 1969-The BBs worked on the song “Loop de Loop.”
March 12 and 14-The BBs worked on the song “Forever.”  Three days later a moog was added to the song.  On March 18-The BBs were at the Capitol Tower to work on Loop de Loop and the next day they worked on the Sunflower track, All I Wanna Do.

Circa March 12 1971-Around this time The Beach Boys including Brian were seen in an airline commercial, filmed in the studio- Bruce talks to the camera-while the band sing This Whole World at the piano in the Background.  This footage aired on VH1 once in the late 1980s.
Mar 15 1971-Dennis held a session for the tracks Old Movies and Barnyard Blues.  March 15 1972-The group rehearsed during the day at a High School in Binghamton NY as this was the first tour with Toni Tennile. It was also Bruce’s last tour till 1978. The next day they played at the State University of NY at Oneonta Spectrum and then were in Philadelphia on March 17 1972. David Marziale of the Bucks County Courier Times reported that the Beach Boys “combined some of their later hits-‘Wouldn’t It Be Nice’, ‘Good Vibrations’ etc, with some of the older one like ‘I Get Around’ and the direct take from Berry ‘Surfin’ USA.’…The new songs they played ‘Surf’s Up’ and ‘Student Demonstration Time’ combine modern themes with basic Beach Boy music.  They have not resorted to copying the new groups but are blending new ideas into their music.  They are changing but in their own way.” They were at Montclair College on March 18 and at Cortland College in Syracuse on March 19 1972.

March 9, 1973-Carl was in Holland to pick up an Edison award on Dutch TV. Three day later Al was in the studio to work on something called Dr. Tom.  On March 16 1973-The BBs played a benefit show for prison reform at the University of California in Riverside, CA.  The band now included Carli Munoz and Billy Hinsche in place of the Captain and Tennile. The next day the BBs played another prison benefit at UC Santa Barbara. On March 18 1973-They played at UC Irvine. British writer Nick Kent attended for NME.  Kent called the acoustics “terrible…but the music was beautiful” and noted that Murray Wilson watched the second half of the show with the promoter, while Marilyn Wilson danced in the aisles, though Brian was nowhere to be seen.

March 15 1974-The BBs began a short Pacific Northwest tour in Salem Oregon-with Jim Guercio taking over bass duties and Bobby Figueroa playing his first tour as drummer (Dennis still had not returned to the kit-and instead just sang and played occasional piano). The next day they appeared at the Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, WA. On March 17 they played the Coliseum in Vancouver.  During the show, Dennis and Mike, two unlikely partners in crime, streaked across the stage much to Carl’s amusement and surprise. The short tour ended in Victoria, BC on March 18 1974.

March 11 1975-Dennis worked on the song Rainbows at Brother.
The next day Brian was at RCA studios and had his infamous meeting with Elvis, who was recording in the building.  Brian asked Elvis to come listen to what he was working on and then asked the King’s opinion of the music.  Elvis was not impressed! March 9 to 12 1976 Queen played at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium and Dennis attended one show with BBs Agent Chip Rachlin.  During this time Brian and the BBs were working on 15 Big Ones.  On March 9 they worked on Sea Cruise, while on March 10 they worked on “On Broadway-with Al on lead.  On March 11 1976 work was done on “In the Still of the Night.” On March 15 they worked on an unreleased version of “Mony, Mony with Billy Hinsche on lead. Mar 16 1976 they worked on “Rock and Roll Music,” “Just Once In My Life.” March 17 1976-work was done “A Casual Look,” and “Chapel of Love.” March 18 1976 they worked on TM Song and on March 19 1976 they worked on “Talk To Me.”

March 11, 1977-Brian was working on Adult Child and held an Orchestration session for Deep Purple, Life is for the Living, It’s Over Now and Still I Dream of It.  Dennis was also trying to finish his LP and on March 13 he worked on Feel the Pull.  Two days later he worked on
Time.  On March 18 1977 he held a session for “Dreamer.”

March 8 and 9 1978-The BBs played in Melbourne in Australia. One show was filmed by Australian TV Channel 7 and aired as “Good Vibrations from the Myer Music Bowl-with Carl at his worst and Brian mostly perched on a riser playing bass. The BBs played in Adelaide on March 12 and then moved on to Perth. Carl’s all time worst performance was March 14, where he literally keeled over.  He had to hold a press conference and apologize the next day before that evening’s show.  Carl told reporters that had taken a Valium and two other pills on an empty stomach and that the combinations of these medications and two beers he drank had a major effect on him.  As Stephen Ames Carlin noted in his Brian Wilson biography, Carl played an interminable version of Good Vibrations at this show and it was Brian who moved things mercifully along by suddenly interrupting him and launching into the unreleased “Hum-De-Dum” section of the original track, which allowed the band to force the song to a conclusion. The Australian tour ended with relatively uneventful shows in Sydney on March 18 and 19 1978. I discussed this tour at great length in my book.

March 14 1979-Brian held a session for American Spring to work on the song Romeo and Juliet.  March 9, 1980-The BBs played a benefit for George Bush Senior in Sunrise FL.  Mike and Bruce developed a fondness for Bush and campaigned for him in 1988.  March 19, 1980-the BBs played in Ottawa without Dennis. Although he was kicked out of the band at the time to try and force him into rehab, the band initially told reporters that he "missed the flight from Los Angeles" and then suggested he had “caught the flu.” March 11, 1982-Carl was working on Youngblood and held a session for Another Night Alone.  On March 17 1982-work was done on the title track, Youngblood.

March 17 1982-The BBs started a tour in Houston, TX without Carl, who was not yet back fulltime. Mary Elizabeth Walker of the Houston Post reported, “From the opening ‘California Girls’ and ‘I Wanna Go Home (Sloop John B)’ to such classics as ‘Do It Again’ and ‘Little Deuce Coupe,’ the vocals were strained, with Mike Love’s voice often sounding squeaky, as if he had inhaled helium from inside a balloon.  Of all the band members only Al Jardine distinguished himself on songs like ‘Heroes and Villains’ and ‘Lady Lynda.’ His voice at least was able to project and sustain itself in the chorus.” The next day the BBs played in Fort Worth.  Prior to the evening show Mike teamed up with Dean for a spring break show on South Padre Island.  The BBs then played two nights in Sunrise FL.

March 15, 1983-Mike and Dean performed at South Padre Island for the second year in a row and then played another free spring break show at Daytona Beach, FL on March 17. March 17 1984-The BBs played at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, LA and an evening show in Albany, Georgia. The next day they performed at Daytona Beach, FL with Firefall.  In their absence an overdub session was held for
Chasin’ the Sky.  March 10, 1985-Brian performed at a benefit for LA’s homeless at the Palace Theater with Jackson Browne, The Bangles, Belinda Carlisle and others. There is some video of this.  The other BBs played at the Marriot Hotel in Maui as part of the Kemper Open Golf festivities around this time.  Think I’ll end here

Thanks Ian! I really enjoy reading these posts.

I feel obligated to add to this  Grin

According to Ernst Jörgensen's "A life in music", this meeting happened as Elvis was just finishing work on "Pieces of my life" which he recorded for his album "Today". As he was listening to the playbacks Brian stormed in, which was puzzling because the Memphis Mafia made sure that no one would get in there without Elvis' ok. So nobody knew how Brian got in there.
I believe Brian was working on the California Music project with Bruce Johnston and Terry Melcher, is that correct? This picture might come from those sessions:

These sessions gave us a fantastic version of "Why do fools fall in love?":

According to Jerry Schilling, Elvis didn't realize that this guy was Brian Wilson, as he looked so unlike he had before.
Early 1975 was actually a good time frame for Elvis as he had detoxed in the hospital. But it didn't last long. There were some good shows later that month in Vegas. Here's a picture from March 18th:

Here's the song he was working on.

Pieces of my life (from first take to master):

Personally, I'm not much of a fan of this recording. But the Brian connection makes it kinda special.

Thank you, Mr. Rusten, this is great thread series.

2 Rocker: Being big Elvis fan, did you read in Elvis bios if he liked The BBs? favorite songs? There's videos with him singing "Lady Madonna" & "Something". Did he do The BBs, maybe short goofy jam?

I'll let Rocker chime in-but I am pretty knowledgable about Elvis as well and don't think he ever recorded a BB tune-even in a rehearsal. Jerry Schilling-who was Elvis' good friend and a manager of the BBs (as well as Carl's personal manager) may know more-but didn't mention it in his book

Ian's right. As of yet there's no known recording of Elvis singing a Beach Boys tune. During the rehearsals for 1970s "That's the way it is" engagement he sang an impromptu version of "Cottonfields". But there's no reason to believe he had the BBs version in mind, especially since CCR released their version in late '69.
Elvis used to have a jukebox that was always updated with the current top 40, so he definitely had some of the Beach Boys' singles, as they had so many hits. And as a fan of vocal music, I'm sure he enjoyed them
I really wish there'd be a picture of Elvis and the Boys, but I don't think there are any. Closest thing are pictures of Elvis and Glenn Campbell, who became friends. Or of Carl and Jerry Schilling and Joe Esposito.

Aside from Jerry Schilling, there are also some other connections between the two acts. Priscilla Presley's sister worked for the Beach Boys (you can find her mentioned in the credits for KTSA). And of course Myrna Smith of the Sweet Inspirations later worked closely with Carl for his solo record(s).
The Beach Boys and Jan&Dean used Elvis' plane (not the Lisa Marie AFAIK). Jan and Dean did take part in Elvis' famous footbal matches. Years ago there was an auction of a record sleeve (I think it was a record sleeve) that was autographed by Jan, Dean, Elvis and Dennis Wilson. I believe the story was, that it was signed after such a game of football. So, if true, maybe Dennis also took part.

As I've posted before Bruce met Elvis at a session in 1966 and al and Bruce met him in 1968. Jack Lloyd took assorted bbs and wives including Brian and Marilyn to one of Elvis August 1969 vegas shows-undoubtedly the chance to see Elvis at his post army performing peak but they couldn't meet him after the show

As I stated in the post it was march 12 1975. It's not impossible that they met before that but if so it isn't recorded

Here's one of those interviews. Brian and Mike on Jimmy Fallon's show in 2012:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9VHaiDzDiY

I believe Brian's first "autobiography" mentioned two meetings. One in '69 and one in '75. But it since has come out that there was only this one known meeting that Ian mentioned.
It certainly is possible that they met other times, after all Brian and the Beach Boys were arguably the biggest musical act in the US. But Elvis didn't hang out with other celebrities very much as he wasn't into that showbiz thing.

Right Brian has a sharp memory for many things but like everyone he sometimes is inaccurate or doesn't recall. Multiple sources say he was introduced to john Lennon in 1974 but Brian doesn't recall it.  As for his first book there are a multitude of inaccuracies in that book

Searched through Ed Roach's pictures of Dennis and the Boys on Facebook and found a shot that was taken in Elvis' plane on tour with Jan & Dean:

Thanks to Ed!

So would the '75 meeting be the source of Brian's hand full of stories about meeting Elvis (e.g. telling Fallon that he got karate chopped, and years earlier in '98 telling Howard Stern that Elvis called him (Brian) "duke").

I don't know but it seems like a lot of things to have happened all at one short meeting where Elvis was not pleased with the song and left.   Being a big Elvis fan, I had only known the one about the song in 1975 (it has to be '75 because the only time other than that would have to be 1972, and I don't think Brian was in CA in 1972 when Elvis would have been recording).

I've never heard the comment to Howard Stern before.

However, the karate chop incident seems likely.  I don't think Elvis would have been angered by the situation in Vegas in '69 had they met then, but I could see him doing that in '75.  Later '75 was a wacky period for Elvis due to the medication, etc.

Like I said Elvis spent a lot of time in LA and Brian could have many opportunities to cross paths with him. There are many witnesses to the 1975 meeting and no one can pinpoint a 1969 meeting other then Brian's first autobiography, which has a lot of inaccuracies. In 1969 it is true that Brian attended a vegas gig but jack Lloyd told me that he couldn't get the bbs access to a personal meeting
