I just find this too hard to do. The hits have to be there, but how do you fit in as many hits as space allows and still have room for some personal favorites? Anything hit-oriented is always going to rely heavily on 62-67 tracks. After that, it goes more to key tracks and personal favs, and I really feel like that needs to be a separate disc. There are a lot of bands that are served well by a single disc comp, but not the BB's.

That's why I think Warmth of the Sun works perfectly with Sounds of Summer.  SOS has all of the big hits, while WOTS has some of the hits that didn't make SOS, as well as fan favorites like Friends, Feel Flows, Til I Die, etc.

Endless summer and PS are still the best way to start a 1CD collection.
I agree Endless Summer is nice collection, but I have to disagree about Pet Sounds. Pet Sounds, as far as I know, is the worse, if not the worst, way to be introduced to the Beach Boys discography. It's a great album, but there are two reasons why I think it's inappropriate for non-fans to get started:

1. You need to get a certain context behind Pet Sounds to understand the album. In spite of its static presence on "all-time greatest albums" lists by rock magazine, the sound of Pet Sounds, at the first listen, never sounds like rock, and sounds way too complicated for non-fans to enjoy it immediately. The word "immediately" is important, since unless they soon will learn to enjoy the album, they would eventually find it "boring" with only several listens and give up on it. IMO, All Summer Long, Today, Summer Days and Sunflower all would be better starter.

2. In case the person you recommended BB liked/loved Pet Sounds, then the problem is that what they choose next - get back to the first album, or move on to the next album. Big No. Both Surfin' Safari and Smiley Smile is not a good starter for those who "only" love PS, and I think you already know why. Probably the last proper album, Summer Days would work for them, but even with that album I can see some fail to get it.

So, if you want to introduce someone to the BB with one comp and one original albums, either Endless Summer or Sound of Summer, and either All Summer Long and Sunflower are the good choices, in my opinion.
Well said Watamushi, Pet Sounds can be intimidating as hell on first listen without context....

And production aside, I’d so much rather hear a 14 year old David Marks shred some guitar on Chug-a-lug than hear a 51 year old Mike Love sing about bangin some chick in a swimming pool.-rab2591

4. Little Deuce Coupe
5. Fun, Fun, Fun
6. All Summer Long
7. Little Saint Nick
8. In the Back of My Mind
9. Help Me, Rhonda
10. Barbara Ann
11. God Only Knows
12. Good Vibrations
13. Surf's Up (Smile)
14. Vega-Tables (Smiley Smile)
15. Darlin'
16. Busy Doin' Nothing
17. Time to Get Alone
18. Breakaway
19. Tears in the Morning
20. Long Promised Road

B.E. ,

Whoops, didn't mean to include Lady Lynda twice, though I do love that song!

And my favorite version is the one from Made In California

The "..Classics Selected By Brian Wilson" CD does an excellent job. Sometimes when these collections stop at a certain point in the group's history, it's doing them a favor.  Grin

Yep, and I believe songs like Wendy, Let Him Run Wild, all I wanna do, Our Sweet Love etc. which are on the albums I pointed would help them with their future fully understanding of Pet Sounds Cheesy

It's a nice compilation, but my only concern is that it doesn't present non-Brian works at all so that it could give people wrong understanding of the BB career: Brian =The Beach Boys.

If I made such thing, I'd include every favorite song - f.ex. "At My Window", "Good To My Baby", "10 Little Indians", "Wind Chimes" (Smiley), "Take A Load Off Your Feet". It's logical that CD would be sth. I'd like listening to.

Impossible. A decent BBs best of would have to take up a minimum of 8 discs.

I think the idea is to make a CD for the casual fan, giving them the hits and then one or two extras they might not have heard. Then if they get hooked they can dig deeper.

Here's my attempt. Not even going to bother listing all the tracks I wanted to include but couldn't.

1   Surfin' Safari
2   Surfin' USA
3   Little Deuce Coupe
4   In My Room
5   I Get Around
6   All Summer Long
7   Wendy
8   When I Grow Up
9   California Girls
10   Help Me Rhonda (single)
11   Wouldn't It Be Nice
12   God Only Knows
13   Caroline, No
14   Good Vibrations
15   Little Pad
16   Wild Honey
17   Darlin'
18   Do It Again
19   This Whole World
20   Forever
21   Marcella
22   Good Time
23   Good Timin'
24   Goin' On
25   Getcha Back
26   Somewhear Near Japan
27   That's Why God Made The Radio
28   Summer's Gone

There IS perfect career-spanning comp - Sounds Of Summer. 3D Why can't everybody list their fave tracks instead as single CD? It seems people dread listing random fave tracks & go with banal "usual suspects" hit songs. Besides, the faves comp CAN be career-spanning too.

I'd have to include a minimum of 5 tracks from every album, not just hits but also standout album cuts, ecery single album would have to be represented-solo records and obscure stuff (such as Mike and Dean, Sunkist album, Salute to Nascar, Songs From Here and Back) included, and don't forget the unfinished/unreleased albums, standout vault/bootleg tracks...
