Carl cared about the quality of the music. I find it hard to believe that he would have supported removing the second best singer in the band.

Al himself has said that, due to Al disagreeing with Mike's business moves with the band and Carl not backing Al, there was some estrangement between Al and Carl.

Unless someone is willing to come forth with *some* morsel of new info about what Carl was thinking back around that time, the evidence at hand suggests Carl had by 1996/97, even prior to his illness, given up on aspiring to anything new or great with the Beach Boys. The live shows were certainly professional and Al and Carl sounded great vocally, but the setlist had been pretty stale for years. It seemed even for Carl to be a bit of a job, a business. So while I certainly would hope Carl would have tried to fight for Al, I don't think it's impossible that, having already rolled over and let Mike take control of the touring band, that Carl would have continued on even with Al booted.

The whole shifting of band members around this time period has always entrigued me. If it wasn’t for Carl’s tragic passing you wonder what might have been. I could certainly see Carl retiring or even sticking with Mike. Couldn’t imagine him with Brian touring Pet Sounds or even later Smile. Especially since he evidently vetoed The Beach Boys Pet Sounds tour of the 90’s(?) and him and Brian were on the outs if I’m not mistaken.

I think anybody in 1996 or 97 worrying that Brian couldn't pull off a PS tour would have been *absolutely* justified.

But I also think Carl could have been a "proof of concept" sort of guy, and after Brian knocked out some solo touring, doing deep cut setlists and all of that with an epic band, Carl could have been swayed *on that particular* issue.

I think if Carl had survived, by another 10 or 20 years he would have probably retired or otherwise exited as far as being a permanent member. He mentioned in a 1989 interview (a very prescient moment) that he felt it would probably be Mike left standing and touring after everybody else was gone.

Every time this discussion comes up, I feel sad. To think a band that essentially had been together for 37 years could blow apart like that.

What I also found disappointing is that in his book, Mike acknowledges this very same thing but doesn't offer any explanation beyond "sometimes people break up eventually after many years" (I'm obviously very loosely paraphrasing).

Considering how specific Mike is about other episodes in the band's history, his quick glossing over the 1998 dissolution of the band is telling.
