I've been a Jan & Dean fan for years now, but for all this time I had only been able to listen to the remixes of their songs from 1996, since that's what is available digitally and on most CDs I have found. However, I recently picked up the Jan & Dean Complete Liberty Singles CD, which has all of Jan Berry's original mono mixes, and man they are just blowing my mind! I honestly feel like I'm rediscovering Jan & Dean all over again. Jan's mixes have so much punch and low end, that's just totally missing from the remixes. They are so powerful and they really rock. On a side note, I think Jan & Dean made better Surf Rock than the BBs simply, because of how driving and powerful the songs are. One of these reasons I think was that he had really great drums (Hal Blaine and Earl Palmer playing in unison), whereas BW was always telling his drummers (Denny, Hal, etc...) to play more gently.

ANYWAY, if you're a Jan & Dean fan and haven't heard Jan's original mixes, pick up that CD (or mono vinyls if you're lucky) and enjoy!  Smokin Smokin

I agree. I had the same experience when I first got "Complete Liberty Singles". It's stuff like "Batman"'s chorus which in the "stereo"-mix always sounded not together to my ears. But then the original mix...  boom! It fits perfectly.

a diseased bunch of mo'fos if there ever was one… their beauty is so awesome that listening to them at their best is like being in some vast dream cathedral decorated with a thousand gleaming American pop culture icons.

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

Yeah, I have all the original albums in both mono and stereo and most of the singles, and Jan was THE MAN!
he had a great ear (even if not a very good voice!) and its a crime these mixes aren't more readily available.

Yeah, so sad to hear about Eleven Eleven. Got my first turntable last night, and listening to Jan's original mixes on vinyl is an even cooler experience! I think Jan is so underrated as a producer, songwriter, etc...

The Kindle version of my book The Jan & Dean Record is currently on sale again for $3.99. Great time to pick it up and get the details on Jan's studio sessions. The publisher charges an ungodly amount for both the print and electronic versions of the book, so it's a great value while it lasts. The electronic version is not abridged.

Happy Holidays to all,
