Thanks much for posting Santa Ana winds video. That sounded great. Wish Al would have done the whole song. But it was great to hear that, it's been a long time.

Was lucky enough to see the April 2nd show at the City Winery in Chicago! Al (and Matt) was in fine voice throughout and me and my wife had a lovely time! Did see a few other young looking guys as well.

I even got to get an autograph and picture afterwards. LOL I was quite nervous and regret not saying anything to Matt who was stood next to his Dad. Ah well, always another time I guess! Tongue

Nice! Cool

And production aside, I’d so much rather hear a 14 year old David Marks shred some guitar on Chug-a-lug than hear a 51 year old Mike Love sing about bangin some chick in a swimming pool.-rab2591

a diseased bunch of mo'fos if there ever was one… their beauty is so awesome that listening to them at their best is like being in some vast dream cathedral decorated with a thousand gleaming American pop culture icons.

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

The club type venues are allowing for some nice videos of the tour to surface. But man, while I know it would be a pain to do, I wish someone would capture a full show from beginning to end.

I was at the NYC City Winery April 1st show, but didn't have time to post a review. Myonlysunshine did a great job already but I wanted to add a few more thoughts:

-- As everyone has said, both Al and Matt Jardine sound INCREDIBLE. Al's voice is a thing of wonder... on some songs where he took over Brian or Mike leads, I felt like he sounded closer to 60s-era Brian or Mike than even Brian or Mike do themselves. And I got goosebumps during a few of Matt's falsetto leads (as dad Al beamed with pride).

-- The setlist is fairly rigid, it's true, and probably looks a bit pedestrian onscreen. But every song sounded GREAT. It was cool to hear such vibrant versions of the classics in such an intimate space. Even songs like California Girls that we've all heard hundreds of times took on a new sheen. I enjoy both Brian and Mike's current groups very much, but in general the trio had more of a punchy, gutsy, early-60ish sound than I am used to hearing on these songs. There was something thrilling too about hearing such a small group doing the work of a much larger band on these songs. It left a lot of 'space' to hear what each musician was doing.

-- California Saga sounded terrific with those soaring harmonies on the chorus, and was probably the highlight of the night for me.

-- As polished as the songs were, Al's stories for the most part didn't leave quite as much of an impression. An early story of the primitive first recording sessions with the other Beach Boys was cool. A few of his offhand comments during Vegetables and Heroes and Villains suggested how chaotic the Smile era must have been to a fairly straightlaced guy like Al... I felt like there was a more interesting story waiting to be told there.

Such a great night of music. The audience seemed to be made up of fairly hardcore fans and I think more deep cuts would be welcome, but I can't imagine a single person left disappointed.

Updated the top post with some additional setlists that have been posted. I'd still beware a bit of the precise veracity of at least one or two of them. As I've mentioned in the past, there's a regular user with a BB-themed nickname on the setlist.fm who appears to sometimes post setlists without full verification (e.g. sourcing setlists from a message board post saying "last night's show had pretty much the same setlist as the night before", etc.).

In the case of Al's shows, it doesn't appear he's made huge changes from night to night, so I don't doubt these setlists are generally correct.

Al has just added two more shows on a return visit to The Dakota in Minneapolis on May 28 and 30. I've added the dates to the top post.
