Wow, that rendition of Winter Symphony blew me away! One of my favorite cuts that didn't make an album. Did Al have a hand in writing it?
I think it’s a sole Brian writing credit.
I thought Diane wrote the lyrics?
Yes.

Hi, I'm new here and this is my first post. I've been a lurker for several months, and decided I wanted to become a member so I could share my thoughts on the Christmas Show. Sorry this is a few days late--I didn't realize there was a brief waiting period for registration, so it will read as though the concert was the night before. Anyway, my two cents.
I attended the Pittsburgh show last night, and in short, I left pleasantly surprised. This was my first Brian Wilson concert ever, but I felt very realistic in my expectations having read some of the earlier reviews of the Christmas tour, and, well, the fact that Mr. Wilson is 76 years old. Truthfully, compared to the clips of the show from a few days prior, I can tell you that to me, Brian seemed much more lively at the performance this evening. To my memory, yes, he sang about as often as previous posters have mentioned, but I was not disappointed when he did. I thought he sounded terrific on “Christmasey.”
Some random things I noticed:
Brian did not appear to be nearly as uncomfortable as he appeared in the clips from a few days ago. I really only saw him shift in his chair a few times, he did not have a pained expression on his face, moreover, the mouth/jaw movements (perhaps tardive dyskinesia?) he had were much milder and infrequent. I wonder if the fact that there was a full day between this show and the last one had something to do with this, meaning, maybe he got more rest and was feeling better?
Brian’s facial expression stayed fairly neutral most of the evening, but I did not get the sense that he was distracted or bored, or anything like that. On the contrary, at one point, Brian was waving his hands in the air to the music, and my spouse remarked, “I think he likes just being here.” I agreed. And there were a few times when Brian spoke, too. He thanked the audience at the end of the show, and (again, with assistance and a limp) walked off with the rest of the band when they finished singing Auld Lang Syne.
Of course, Al and Blondie were fantastic. Good night, these two can sing! Blondie is an energy guy if I ever saw one, with way he moved around the stage, played guitar and delivered his sonorous vocals. And when Al took the lead with songs like “Christmas Day” and “Help Me Rhonda” I was amazed at how well his voice has maintained its quality. Al was the emcee for the evening, although Blondie talked a bit as well, I recall him saying that he became a Steelers fan when he came to America.
As stated by many others, the band nailed everything perfectly. And I enjoyed Rob’s leads.
Just an item of note, they did perform “Winter Symphony”, but I honestly don’t remember if they played “White Christmas.” I don’t think they did.
From where we sat, Heinz Hall appeared to be about two-thirds to possibly three-quarters full. Most of the attendees looked to be 60+ years of age.
In the end, I am so glad I went. I am not quite out of my thirties, but most of the musicians I admire and listen to are either in their twilight years or are deceased, so, to see Brian Wilson (my favorite songwriter ever) in person, regardless of anything else, is a privilege and for me, most likely a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, so I just choose to bask in the moment and hold on to the memory.
Great review, thanks! Brian indeed likes being there.

Just got back from tonight’s show at Westbury. I’ve seen Brian almost every year since 2008 and seeing him tonight was very bittersweet. He had to be escorted to and from the stage in a wheelchair which was heartbreaking. Seeing my hero like that isn’t fun.
He sounded okay tonight, he didn’t seem too interested in the Christmas set. They omitted “What I Really Want for
Christmas.” The highlight for me was Christmasey and On Christmas Day. Pretty strong vocals on those ones.
Brian played his keyboard throughout the encore songs. One fan shouted “We love you Brian” and he responded with “thank you.” That was it for the audience interaction. Brian looked uncomfortable in his chair, drinking 2 full bottles of water throughout the show. He sat behind a keyboard, opposed to his white grand. Brings back old memories.
I hope Brian gives it a rest after these shows, it kills me to see him in this condition.

Sounds like it's due to the pain then...gotta commend him for toughing it out but I agree he needs to take it easy for a bit.

This is definitely belated but I got lost in work and Thanksgiving.
I saw Brian in Atlanta just a month ago now.
Going to avoid repeating common sentiments too much so I'm just going to give general observations/thoughts:
1. The opening act from Ireland was surprisingly good. It was a thirty minute set and the male from the duo was highly complimentary of Brian and appreciative of being on tour with "perhaps the greatest pop songwriter of the 20th century." He also noted how most people hated opening acts, etc. so he was mindful of that. All in all, they did a good job.
2. Blondie acted a little strange this go around. He is always energetic but he seemed a little....extra... this time. His delivery of "Feel Flows" was off enough to be distracting but "Sail on Sailor" was fine. I'm speculating that maybe he was a bit under the influence? I only bring this up because the person I went with even said something was weird and she didn't have past performances to compare against.
3. Brian definitely was squirming in his seat and touching his face and hair pretty regularly. His singing was off beat and missed his parts a few times. The band did a good job going with it though. For example, on "That's Not Me" Brian didn't sing Mike's fade out part but the band did a good job playing it out and really highlighting the awesome instrumental track that it is. The 12 string and organ really were locked in and it was really nice to hear that cool little 12 string lick play out live.
4. Rob Bonfiglio did a really nice job. I have seen the Pet Sounds show with both Matt and Rob and I can't complain about Rob at all. In fact, I think one of the highlights of the show was Rob's delivery of "Don't Worry Baby." He really sang it heartfeltly and with the emotion the original recording has. You can really see he was feeling this one through his body language and gestures. I felt chills go down my spine.
5. It was touching when Al changed the lyric during "IJWMFTT" to "he" instead of "I" and gestured with his head and hands towards Brian as the song hard ended. Al's eyes were closed and had a bit of a bittersweet look on his face as he did this. I think he senses something as well. This song took on a completely new meaning for me watching an old Brian sound and look a bit worn down. For the first time live that I have seen him (5th time for me), he had that weight of the world on his shoulders look again.
6. "Caroline, No" was just the cherry on top in terms of an end of an era vibe I got. The album was originally from the perspective of a young man towards life and love. Now it's meaning has changed. It's more of an old man looking back at himself. The song is more about Brian than about Carol at this point. When the train sounds kicked in, I had this weight on my chest and shoulder feeling like "wow, this really is it. End of an era. Can't believe it. "
7. Brian actually kicked back into gear when he closed out with "Love and Mercy." Now that I think about it, he seemed a bit more "on" with the GH segment and his encore than with the Pet Sounds stuff. Granted, he wasn't in his best form regardless but he sang way better on "Love and Mercy" than he had at any point beforehand.
On the ride back, we listened to the Sunshine Tomorrow album and the a capella version of "Surfer Girl" came on and I nearly lost it. Luckily I couldn't since I had to really focus on the road with all the rain.... but damn.... no one does it better than the Beach Boys. Sorry to see it all fade away. Thanks for the memories and soundtrack to my life.

Amazing performance from Blondie, the 1970s BBs are reborn as the BW band.
Brian is carrying on Carl and Dennis' legacy and Blondie seems to agree!

The band was on fire last night . Brian was doing good , strong voice , announcing a little and singing some backgrounds . He and Al sounded great on Winter Symphony and trading lines with Rob on Frosty. Brian absolutely belted out Good Vibes and hit the high note on the second verse but then you could tell he was tired after that . He started Looking at Al a lot for support, Al encouraged him to play the piano . I do think Brian wants to be there !!!!! It’s just the stamina . He gets tired by the end and I’m sure is in pain. I don’t know if he could do it without Al being there at this point . But the band channeled 70s BB last night with the sound and energy . Good Vibes into Rhonda has the crowd going crazy .
