Hey guys I'm back from the sidelines with another question. It's been bugging me but I can't figure out the electric sounding instrument used on It's Over Now, Still I Dream of It and Deep Purple. I can only think to describe it as a flourishing noise? haha

it's on the end of deep purple https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Zx4nTDvw5o -around 2:07 and on

it happens at the start of SIDOI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eoRhd-XUYkM 0:01 and on

and same with the beginning of ION https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9D1Kx79Fe4w around 0:04

If you know what plays this I'll be greatly appreciative!  3D

I've always thought that was an electric guitar with a heavy flanger on it, or a synthesizer, perhaps a Moog, or a Farifsa (that's the name of the synth that does light string sounds, right?)

Farfisa is a portable, plastic organ. The light string sounds you're thinking of would more likely be from an ARP String Ensemble.
I've obtained the AFM contracts from those sessions, and among the players is guitarist Dennis Budimir, who is paid for "2 doubles" - leading me to suspect that, in addition to playing guitar on the basic track, he overdubbed extra parts - one of which I would suspect to be a guitar with that "flourish" effect you've described. At any rate, I've long wondered the same as you what specifically is making that sound on those songs, and wondered if it might be a synth. But now I tend to suspect guitar, based on that finding.

I can't say what it is, but I did notice that it sounds a LOT like an instrument used by Prince on a studio recording from nearly the exactly same era, here's a previous post that I made on it. Would love to find out what it is! (I'm guessing a guitar flanger pedal, but who knows):

I just started digging into Prince’s catalog (which just finally hit Spotify), and noticed an identical-sounding flanging/phasing instrument on his 1978 song “So Blue” at 3:15 (no Youtube link available for this, but it’s on Spotify), which sounds just like the flanging/phasing instrument on The BBs’ “It’s Over Now” at 2:24.

all in all it's a very interesting noise that would be cool to replicate!
