Sad about the news of Tom Petty's passing.  I was nothing more than a casual fan, but I always enjoyed his music, especially his tribute to Brian, Hung Up and Overdue, which appears on the great soundtrack he did called She's The One which also features Carl on background vocals.

RIP

FYI, there's a Petty thread in the General Music portion of the board.

Speaking of BB connections, the first track of his 1999 Echo album "Room at the Top of the World" is apparently a tribute to Carl Wilson who'd passed the year prior.

John Fogerty included "I won't back down" in his current show. Here's him giving a tribute to Tom Petty:

a diseased bunch of mo'fos if there ever was one… their beauty is so awesome that listening to them at their best is like being in some vast dream cathedral decorated with a thousand gleaming American pop culture icons.

PRO SHOT BEACH BOYS CONCERTS - LIST

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

Apparently, Jason Aldean also performed 'I Won't Back Down' last night on SNL. Good choice.

This is awful! RIP Tom.

Flashback to the late 70s. I am at the Golden Bear Club in Huntington Beach CA to see McGuinn, Hillman & Clark - three Byrds. Great table up front. Who sits down right next to me for the show? Tom Petty and Mike Campbell. Great show!

Tom Petty also had one of my favorite quotes/anecdotes about Brian (I pulled this from old thread, so I can't vouch for the source of it's an exact quote):

"I met Brian in a restaurant in LA recently. Thought he was the perfect gentleman, right up until he buttered his head and put it between two slices of bread."

I never really liked that quote....
