f***. This one really hurts. Just an incredibly likeable and talented guy. What else is there to say? I was already depressed about the Vegas disaster, this didn't make today any easier. EDIT: After a number of conflicting reports, it was confirmed that Tom Petty has died at the age of 66.

And production aside, I’d so much rather hear a 14 year old David Marks shred some guitar on Chug-a-lug than hear a 51 year old Mike Love sing about bangin some chick in a swimming pool.-rab2591

As I just wrote on FB, while I don't think even in a BB-related forum it needs to stay BB-centric to celebrate Tom Petty, this song with Carl on backing vocals is nevertheless a great one, a relatively hidden gem, "Hung Up and Overdue": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFIeeb5D9_k

My thoughts exactly. Man, this shocked me. It's hard to accept. I've bonded with many people over his music. He's always been a part of my life. He's up there with the all-time greats. Can't believe it. Really sad.

Tom Petty also had one of my favorite quotes/anecdotes about Brian (I pulled this from old thread, so I can't vouch for the source of it's an exact quote):
"I met Brian in a restaurant in LA recently. Thought he was the perfect gentleman, right up until he buttered his head and put it between two slices of bread."

Tom was one of those musicians who just got it - He knew what was cool almost like an instinct, and whether or not it followed or bucked any commercial trends. I connected with him from a distance as a kid reading him talk about vintage guitars and amps, how he and Mike Campbell loved to scour pawn shops and flea markets for cool guitars while they were on tour...he just loved what was cool in music and didn't give a f*** what people thought.
He was a true American original, a dyed-in-the-wool music fan who lived the dream. He also made MTV in those early days. His videos were short films that had some artistic merit behind them...not just concert videos or miming to the latest hit.
He also was one of the biggest rock musicians who openly praised and cited Brian Wilson's music and influence, especially Pet Sounds. I love his interview where he mentioned buying PS session bootlegs in the early 90's and describing how he'd drive people crazy listening to Brian run take after take in the studio.
He was a kindred spirit to a lot of us here in that regard, and for me as a lover of guitars, amps, the cool stuff in music, and the pure joy of plugging in a guitar and playing a D chord through a Fender Twin at very loud volume.
I'm sure he'll find his way to some vintage Rickenbacker, plug it into a vintage Fender amp, and jam old tunes with his pals in no time...
RIP Tom.

It's not a hoax. Petty's manager confirmed it. This was just posted on the TP & The Heartbreakers official Facebook page.

It's not a hoax. Petty's manager confirmed it. This was just posted on the TP & The Heartbreakers official Facebook page. Apparently it was reported that he was brain dead and taken off machines, then it was retracted because he was still on life support(and his daughter slammed Rolling Stone for reporting that he was dead).

I remember watching Tom Petty on the VMA's in the early 90's, playing Mary Jane's Last Dance. I cried because I had to go to bed early and couldn't watch it. I complained so much that they let me stay up until he performed.

Very sad news.
His tour just wrapped up a week ago, and he seemed in good health.

Sad about the news of Tom Petty's passing. I was nothing more than a casual fan, but I always enjoyed his music, especially his tribute to Brian, Hung Up and Overdue, which appears on the great soundtrack he did called She's The One which also features Carl on background vocals. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bSl9ykaiNvwRIP
