A reworked Beach Boys song featuring members of Queen and Foo Fighters has been blocked from being released following a legal dispute.

The supergroup have been working on updating 'Holy Man', which was co-written by late Beach Boys member Dennis Wilson and his lead singer brother Brian, 75.

Dennis' co-writer Stephen Kalinich is the only person who was able to hear the song in its original form and he claims he hasn't had access to it for more than three decades.

The 'Little Bird' drummer tragically drowned at Marina Del Rey in 1983, and the track has been stored away in a vault ever since.

The original music was created by the 'Good Vibrations' hitmakers in 1974, and the rough tape was sent to Queen's guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor and the US rockers.

A source said: "The song is in a vault and nobody can do anything about it.

"It's such a shame as there will clearly be a huge demand for it."

Dennis's co-writer Stephen says it is "such a shame" that no one will be able to get their ears on the "six-minute masterpiece" because of the law.

He told The Sun newspaper: "It's over six minutes long and it's a masterpiece, but we've never been able to release it because we can't get the legalities worked out. Such a shame.

"People hear it and, honest to God, it brings tears to their eyes."

Foo Fighters' drummer Taylor Hawkins recorded vocals on their version and Stephen says he sounded just like Dennis with "the same gravelly, whisky voice".

He added: "Taylor sent the track to Brian May and he and Roger Taylor fell in love with it. They spent weeks fooling around with it, putting on vocals and some incredible percussive things."

This one make it sound like no version of Holy Man's ever been released and claims it was co-written by Brian

But incredibly a track does exist that fuses together music’s ultimate supergroup.

A six-minute version of Holy Man, written by the late Beach Boys singer and drummer DENNIS WILSON, is locked in a vault having been worked on by members of Queen and the Foos.
A huge legal dispute has blocked its release, meaning it’s unlikely — at present — fans of three of the biggest bands in history will ever hear it.
A source said: “The song is in a vault and nobody can do anything about it.
“It’s such a shame as there will clearly be a huge demand for it.”

After its original recording by the Beach Boys in 1974, nine years before Dennis tragically drowned off California, the unfinished tapes of the track has been passed to both Queen and the Foos and according to industry experts, the song has more than a whiff of Bohemian Rhapsody about it.

Dennis’s co-writer Stephen Kalinich is one of a lucky few who’ve heard it and describes the track as “a masterpiece”.
He said: “It’s over six minutes long and it’s a masterpiece, but we’ve never been able to release it because we can’t get the legalities worked out. Such a shame.
“People hear it and, honest to God, it brings tears to their eyes.”

Stephen, a poet and lyricist, said the song got “put on the shelf and I never heard it again for 31 years” after the Beach Boys tried to finish it.
Foo Fighters drummer TAYLOR HAWKINS added his vocals, which Stephen described as “like Dennis, the same gravelly, whisky voice”.
He added: “Taylor sent the track to BRIAN MAY and he and ROGER TAYLOR fell in love with it. They spent weeks fooling around with it, putting on vocals and some incredible percussive things.”

The closest the song has ever been to being released was when a film about Dennis, brother of lead singer BRIAN, was in the works, but the project was canned and the film’s director was denied the opportunity to seal the rights to his back catalogue.
Hopefully one day it will see the light of day.

As much as it pains me to say so, I mostly agree with RRA1 and disagree with you entirely. I agree that Holy Man is nothing special (though I'm not sure about the POB part), and consider Kalinich's lyrics pretty bad on the whole.

Are you sure this song is not getting mixed up with something else. Brian and Dennis did not collaborate but on Thankful Are We For Little Children it says that's written by Brian Dennis and Kalinich

Kalinich's lyrics weren't used for the released version of "Holy Man" - reportedly, he had tried to write lyrics for the tune back in the '70s, but never finished. Gregg Jakobson's lyrics were used for the released version, after being re-written by Taylor Hawkins.

Technically it doesn't change my actual points or arguments. But I won't belabor the point, lest I'm seen as pedantic... which, well, I learned my lesson.

Holy Man may not be the most complex track in the world but its vibe is fantastic. Kalinich's lyrics were cliched but the whole is greater than the sum of its parts when combined with Dennis's music (Little Bird, Be Still)  or Brian's (California Feeling).

the plot thickens - found another radio station news page claiming they've spoken to Gregg Jakobson & Roger Taylor from Queen with what appears to be new interview quotes (pos broadcast on the station)
