Random question, but it just popped into my head the other day. For the decades and decades that The BBs have been a band and toured around the world (as well as just living the lives of millionaires), how many different types of cars have the band members been in, either as passengers being driven around, or as drivers? Mike Love flies coach; does that mean he rents the cheapest bargain econobox Chevy Aveo at the local Hertz when he wants to get around by himself while in a random city? Or does he perhaps Uber?

Not necessarily talking about how many cars the members have owned (that's been discussed in a previous topic), but just the sheer massive amount of cars all around the world that they might have crossed paths with as passengers or drivers.

In 56 years of the BBs name being a thing, have any band members ever been in a Geo Metro? An AMC Pacer? A Model T?

For example, I think someone on this board (was it OSD perhaps? I can't recall) talked about giving some BB bandmembers a ride for a few blocks in an early 70s Camaro, which is an awesome story. I'd love to hear more stories like that, and just more on this topic in general if anyone has any thoughts. Probably they've been inside tons upon tons of different types of luxury American limos, for one.

Mike Love, Stamos, and Mark McGrath are currently driving around in a white Chevy panel van that says "Candy" on the side.

Except that time he drove a Dodge Dynasty/Chrysler New Yorker in that video Smiley

There was an ad from the late 70s with the Boys and their respective cars I think for stereos or speakers. Haven't seen that in awhile.

Awesome recollections, thanks so much, Stephen.

I imagine that just due to the band being on the road and out of town so much, they wound up as passengers in a very wide array of different types of random cars over the years, too.

Kind of surprising also that there weren't more officially licensed automobiles attached to the band.

There's quite a bit of information about their cars in this thread:

Thankfully Al got over his weird obsession with the PT Cruiser, perhaps in part because they stopped making them. I was excited when he released an actual single back in the early 2000s, and my interest was piqued when he included FIVE different mixes of it. Then I actually heard the song and my heart sank.

The eventual "Postcards from California" is quite good, I'm a huge proponent of Al solo material (I'd probably rather hear another "Postcards" type album than hear Al just guesting on a few tracks on another Brian solo album), but years earlier the "PT Cruiser" song was pretty bleh. It's a seminar in how to do a pastiche (putting it politely) of about a half dozen other famous car songs.

Supposedly, when Al pitched his "solo" song for that Hallmark "Songs from Here and Back" CD in 2006, he gave Hallmark several songs to choose from and they *chose* "PT Cruiser."

But in general, I've never dug extra into what cars they drove because I find the whole "rock stars buying tons of expensive cars" cliché to be kind of disappointing and annoying. Yes, even for a band that did "car" songs. I've always been a million more times impressed with stories of Dennis writing a song than I ever have been about how he raced cars or how the members owned expensive, decadent cars.

That is completely cuckoo that 5 different mixes were released of PT Cruiser. Why?!?!

I'm also less interested in the whole "rock stars buying tons of expensive cars" cliché, and the original idea of the thread was less about what cars the members owned (although I still find that interesting, and in most cases, this would probably indeed be expensive cars), and more about what average, ordinary, humdrum cars the members have probably found themselves in over the decades. Not as car owners, but as passengers, getting a quick unplanned lift to a show/place in another state/country, etc.

I guess it's sort of amusing to think of millionaires being driven around in economy cars just like the rest of us normal folk, but I tend to think that's happened a good number of times over the years. Not that the band wouldn't hire a limo service often times, but as I mentioned earlier, they would occasionally get rides from fans sometimes in Camaros -  odd stuff like that is what I find interesting.

There was an ad in the late 1970's for Craig car stereos, with a photo of the entire group, including Brian, and their cars.

Monogram model cars had a series in the 80's called Rockin' Rods. One was modelled after a '32 Ford Deuce Coupe that Al apparently owned. I think I read something about a 'Cuda that Al had as well, that might have been stolen?

More in the spirit of the original posters question. I have seen various types of ground transportation for the bank over the years including bus, limo, mini van, sometimes all in the same pick up!

Thanks for reposting that, and yes - There are photos and some good info in that thread for those interested. And apologies, the photo host got cranky and all the screen shots and photos I posted there of the cars have disappeared, but I'll try to get them back online somehow for anyone interested. There is a pretty decent amount of info, film, and photos of the band's cars in the 60's that can be found, which is kind of surprising.

Carl's Aston Martin can be seen in "Little Honda" clip. Or is it Annie's? Smb. here or youtube said it's hers.

Al to Chrysler in addition had Plymouth Cuda. Read this topic: http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,8365.0.html

I seem to recall reading that the white Bentley that was featured in the An American Band video was owned by Annie.

I'd guess that when they played in Czechoslovakia in 1969 they would have been driven around in locally-built cars, Škoda <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C5%A0koda_Auto> or Tatra <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tatra_(company)>.  I don't know for sure, but I'd think that the options behind the Iron Curtain in those days would have been limited.

COMMENT to mojoman3061:

I was on that tour. Most of the cars for entertainers were like this Soviet made GAZ. Most cars used were rented limos or taxis. The crew went by multiple lorrys (flat-bed trucks) with the equipment.

COMMENT to CenturyDeprived:

Because Alan, as a producer, cannot make up his mind as to when something is finished. If he had his wish, he would release everything of his over and over -- musical perfection is never reached by Alan Jardine.

COMMENT To SMiLE Brian:

Too many. The last one was a 56-hour marathon of non-stop mixdown at Red Barn.  That mixdown was between Alan, myself, Al's new cappuccino machine and a box of cappuccino pods.  We just kept going and going past two sunrises and sunsets -- "one more take and we'll have it" -- ad infinitum.

Even today, Alan thinks we should re-visit that mix again.

As to the cars at Alan's home . . . He drove a jeep around the ranch and into town.  Maryann drove a Mercedes-Ben coupe, a current model for the time. Alan also had a large older Mercadies sadan, which could hold up to 8 people. It was not a limo, just a big, old Mercedes-Ben. Other vehicles were two John Deere farm tractors, for hauling stuff around -- like hay for the houses.
