Zach returns! This is an excellent cover. You did a great job picking out the parts from the original, and your vocals are clean as can be. I'm looking forward to more of this!

Wow! You nailed it man, down to the handclaps. Mind you, I've yet to hear a cover by you that
hasn't
nailed it.
As for those 14 months----whatever it takes, Zach. It's always well worth the wait. :=)

Those handclaps were a real challenge, John, but I'm glad they were up to snuff.
Thanks a lot, both of you.

Holy wow. Spot on- almost too much so! My only comment would be to add some personal flair too! You killed it, so add some pazazz to the song too ... if that makes sense

Thanks a lot, Mike. I really felt that this was one of my best recordings yet when I was working on it, and I'm glad to see that people seem to be picking up on that! And I appreciate the advice.
To give a little insight into why my covers are the way they are: it can sometimes be really difficult for me to separate songs I love from their arrangements. So if I listen to a cover (recorded by myself or someone else) with a couple of little things changed, all I can think when I listen to that cover is how I wish those things were closer to the original. The one exception is when a cover is completely and totally different, harmonically or rhythmically or both. I won't necessarily enjoy covers of that type (just like I won't necessarily like every new song I hear), but at least I can appreciate it as a separate, yet familiar, entity.
So in short, when covering a song I pretty much always try to go for either something really similar to the original, or something diametrically opposed, with only a little bit of room in between. Examples of the latter are pretty few at this point (I want to make more!), but my "All My Loving" piano cover is definitely one.

I feel ya-- that was totally me with Funky Pretty... I felt the arrangement was perfect but it needed some better mixing, so I took a swing.
Great job with this, seriously!

This is so close i'd have thought you sampled some of the original. Phenomenal job.

You changed.
This is good, I wouldn't say it's big BBs favorite but I like listening to BBs covers to compare - it's fun!
Do you usually decide which song to do? Is it difficult & tell the reason to pick song generally. Favorite? Instruments you can play? Sth. else?

I pretty much always have a song in my head that I want to record. It's by far the easiest part of the process. I'll just be listening to music and a particular song will grab me; next thing I know I'm listening in to a specific part, assessing whether I think I could play/sing it or not. Instruments on the recording definitely play a role. There are a number of Beach Boy songs I've shied away from doing because they have saxophones on them, for example. Popularity is also a factor, albeit a small one. In this case, the recent release of Sunshine Tomorrow helped motivate me to get this finished sooner rather than later.

Thanks to answer. That said

Would it be too ignorant to say that these songs could be played by tuba? Different family, technique but you use the air in either - or is it impossible to do in this case? I ask this question as you see that when smb. covers song, they could replace the instrument(s) if they can't play it, hate it, wish to be creative, anything.

I don't have a tuba anymore (I guess you probably mean trumpet?), but yeah, you're right that I could replace the instruments with something else. But it would sound really different (see response to Mike above)

Yes I read it. You said you wish sth. similar to song you cover. What I meant is leave everything intact & change only
single
instrument (saxophone). You read here & maybe PS that fans find it very cheesy, that it could ruin good song. Therefore, you could replace it with trumpet, modify the solo a bit but the song wouldn't be different from it. As it's just slight change.
Or, when you say "There are a number of Beach Boy songs I've shied away from doing because they have saxophones on them, for example.", do you mean not the 80s songs but the 60s/ 70s works too (can't think even single example right now other than the Wrecking Crew-laden songs)?

Oh, yeah, I mean the 60s songs mostly, not the ones with super prominent solos. I don't have the same attachment to the later tunes' arrangements in general. California Girls, Salt Lake City, Wouldn't It Be Nice, and Friends are examples off the top of my head. It's not just sax, either: flute, accordion, and strings all make me less likely to cover a song. I hear you on just changing the one instrument, and that could definitely work in some cases.
