Looked through the archives, but didn't see anything listed out. Does anyone have a handy release of all the officially released material Mike Love plays sax on? Thanks in advance!

two notes repeated a few times on the song Shut Down and I think that's roughly about it.

I was surprised to learn that Mike added some sax to Pom Pom Playgirl. It's pretty cool and unexpected. It's prominently heard on the sessions on the Keep An Eye on Summer compilation.

I love how after he left his sax at a gig he just stopped playing. Surely he couldve afforded a new one? Mustve been really comitted to it. Hah.

He pretended to play it in the Kokomo video.  Does that count?  LOL

Obviously it's just an excuse, and not the real, ultimate reason. Singing and winking at ladies was probably just more fun than to have to deal with any pesky instrument or learning curve with one. I somehow doubt that Mike exactly *volunteered* to play theramin when they added it to the set, although who knows.

I don't really doubt he left sax by accident (although I suppose leaving it on purpose, but pretending it was an accident is conceivable too); ultimately, if he truly wanted to continue playing, he'd have replaced it like so many replacement BB sweatstained baseball hats over the following decades.

Brian's known as the guy who makes excuses to avoid talking about his real feelings on a variety of subjects, but Mike's just as guilty of that. From the lost sax excuse, to the Coke being a worthy reason to not play Monterey Pop, to the C50 "we have to tackle all the small markets" excuse... Mike's got a bunch of em that I'm simply not really buying.

Wonder why he handed over the fake sax solo duties to Bruce on 'Hot Fun in the Summertime'?

He plays sax at the beginning of one of their oral free surf instrumentals. I believe is Carl's Big Chance maybe?

I've often thought it would have been cool if Mike had become a better sax player, and made his sax solos a big part of the BB's music (at least, say, post-Pet Sounds stuff). Kinda like Springsteen and Clarence Clemons. Some of their Wild Honey through Holland era stuff probably would have sounded neat with some sax solos.

I am surprised too that Mike did not hone his skills at all at a musical
instrument, and as we were discussing, the sax.  By the late 70's and
into the 80's, he could have been quite profound by then.
It obviously doesn't suit every single song, but would have been impressive
to see him burst out a great solo, like Kokomo or an equivalent solo
similar to Carl's guitar solo on 'keepin' the summer alive'.
Sure a pity he didn't approach it musically more.

If Mike had played sax, I wonder if the alternate Pet Sounds Sessions version of God Only Knows (with sax solo) would've had the sax solo performed by Mike, and if so, if Mike would have pressured Brian into choosing that version for release on the album (especially since his contributions to the album were minimal, so he'd probably be extra motivated to make sure any song version showing himself off was chosen for release on the album).

The sax version of GOK is an interesting alternate version, but nothing tops the released one. So maybe we dodged a bit of a bullet there had this played out.

He played sax on the intro to Fun Fun Fun in the '64 "Lost Concert" (and probably on tour at that time too).
