Hey everyone,

I'm currently working on finishing my cover of Surf's Up but I have run into a bit of an issue. Due to the layering of harmonies and massive amounts of reverb on the master track, it is hard for me to pick apart the harmonized chords at the end of the song. I can't tell if the progression is Fm-EbM-Fm6-EbM or it is AbM-Gm-Fm-EbM. Can anyone help me? Any tips would be appreciated- at least I got the other parts figured out!

Hi Ryan, as I hear it the piano chords are basically as follows (you can hear them here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s3TRns_zssM). The letter after the slash is the bass note:

Ab/F - Eb/F - Bb7 - Cm7

Actually, the sevenths in the last two chords are not particularly strong in the finished result so you could be excused for leaving them out. ;=)

Yes indeed. I'll agree with that. It makes the change to a straightforward B flat chord even more stunning.

Like a passing tone, only a whole chord? Interesting. It sounds good.

Yeah, sort of. It's on the downbeat, though. Maybe you knew that, but I wasn't very clear. It shouldn't really sound good, then you play it and it does!

I would be tempted to say that Brian just made a mistake, reaching for a Bb and ended up hitting Ab instead; except for he hits that Bb every single time that chord progression shows up in the song--final mix and on the '67 demo. It's pretty hard to hear on the fade in the final mix, but it's there. In the final mix, you can also hear it loud and clear in the in identical chord progression (besides the bass) of the final solo-Brian section before the fade. "A children's soooooooooooooooooooooooong"
