Wow...Some items of interest here. Shocked

Private photos and writings of Beach Boys among items set for celebrity auction

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., May 24, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- During the long career of the Beach Boys, Mike Love's father traveled with the band, taking photos and holding onto letters, documents and other items that he felt were important.

That collection, lost for many years, has finally surfaced and will be sold at auction Saturday, May 27, by GWS Auctions.

"Milton Love's collection turned up in a dresser that was sold at an estate sale at his home. Of particular interest are the handwritten memoirs by Brian Wilson, offering insights into his well known struggles with mental illness, drugs, and complicated relationships with family and others inside and outside the music industry. I believe this will be a valuable source for biographers, music historians and perhaps museums," said Brigitte Kruse, lead auctioneer of the auction company.

The collection includes more than 55 photo slides of Dennis Wilson, Carl Wilson, Al Jardine, Mike Love and Brian Wilson. Documents include a 1970s copy of Brian Wilson's home lease in California, a personal letter to Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, and a contract between Brian Wilson and his wife, dated in the 1970s.

Also selling in the auction are lost photos of Aaliyah, Nelson Mandela, Tom Hanks, River Phoenix, Madonna, James Brown, Ray Charles, Marilyn Monroe, Lucille Ball, Bob Hope, Bing Crosby and others.

The auction will begin at 10 a.m. Pacific, with online bidding available. Individuals seeking additional information, including inspections, may visit www.thecelebauction.com or  www.gwsauctions.com or email brigitte@gwsauctions.com for an appointment.

Genuinely curious why Milton Love had a bunch of notes between Brian and other people stuffed away in a dresser.

Some of the "personal letters" look more like quick, brief handwritten notes.

This auction house is unfortunately not divulging what *any* of the photos look like, and are hiding the contents of the notes/letters.

The note to Danny Hutton could be "Danny, what are you up to today? Wanna meet for some lunch?" or it could be "Danny, what are you doing today? I've enclosed a full tape copy of the completed, banded album master for "Smile."  LOL

Crazy. I hope someone who is archivist-minded bids on this stuff and makes the content available for the public to eventually see.

Although in other cases like this (like with Beatles type stuff, for example), I'm assuming it's also fairly common for the public to never get a taste of what content is included if the seller wants to be very private? For example, the buyer of the Durrie Parks acetates never shared their contents (either by simply saying what's on them, or by actually transferring the content digitally) with the public, right?

I suppose maybe the buyer keeping the content private helps keep the value higher for a future flip resale?

Interesting how Milt Love was literally Uncle Miltie to the Wilson brothers  LOL

Did anyone read any of the descriptions on the individual items??

Here's one on the supposed Brian "contract" to Marilyn:

The document discusses Brian agreeing to write another song for American Spring within a certain amount of time. It also mentions "running." He further agrees to it being a certain kind of song. On the back of the document there is a mention of a certain amount of money, and the document is signed by Marilyn and Brian Wilson. The document is also dated 07/05/1977. This document's content is quite interesting for being written on a small piece of paper, and is signed by both husband and wife.

Brian to the Maharishi:

This letter is a handwritten document that Brian Wilson wrote to Maharishi in the 1960's, asking him to have Mike Love return to LA for recording.

Brian to Danny Hutton:

From: Brian Wilson To: Danny Hutton (Three Dog Night) Re: Jews - This document is from the estate of Milton Love, and was discovered in a drawer of a dresser that was purchased. It is a photostat copy of "National Airlines" staionary that has a letter from Brian Wilson to Danny Hutton (Three Dog Night). The two gentleman have been close for a very long time, and still are today. The document talks QUITE OPENLY about how Brian feels about "Jews" and a certain "Beef" he has. The document starts off with flattery, and goes into personal finances and his feelings about his journey. The content of this letter suggests that he could be speaking about someone, or group of people that are jewish that he was working with at the time.

Ah, so some of the item descriptions did go into more detail.

Considering folks like McCartney over the years have shut down auctions for items that appear to be personal and could have been "stolen" from him even if he actually gave them away (in McCartney's case I think it was musical manuscripts/lyrics sheets and things like that), I would imagine it's quite possible Brian (and maybe others involved in these documents) could seek to shut down these auctions. All else being equal and no other information at our disposal, he could certainly make a compelling argument that Milton Love shouldn't have been in possession of letters between he (Brian) and others unrelated to Milton.

One can't even be 100% certain a given document was actually sent. Did Danny Hutton ever get that note? Maybe. But maybe not. Are postmarked envelopes included? I know in the case of folks like Lennon and McCartney, that some potentially "unsent" letters/drafts have been found.

Some interesting bits & bobs, for sure, but those estimates seem pretty high to me. $20,000 for two slides? $9,000 for a single negative? Also, how can GWS be so sure that the photos are "never before seen"? I suppose if they are Mike's (or Milton's) own personal photos/negs that might indicate some level of "exclusivity".... There's also no indication that the items are being sold with copyright, so even if you win it, what do you do with it?

If I'm not mistaken, the Rovell family (and therefor Marylin) is jewish.

Somebody doesn't know the difference between Brian & Dennis
https://www.proxibid.com/aspr/Dennis-Wilson-W-Redd-Foxx-UNSEEN-Slide-1975/36040846/LotDetail.asp
(was this intended to be used on a website at some point)

Why is Brian apparently writing about himself in the third person?
https://www.proxibid.com/AuctionImages/4965/127252/FullSize/10R_1.jpg

and why did Mike's dad own/collect personal documents of Brian's (and who's calling Mike, Dr. Love anyway)?

Remember when AGD single handedly debunked that 1964 letter he supposedly wrote to his "girlfriend"? Maybe he should take a look at these.

I'm thinking that maybe Milt agreed to aid an author or film producer and gathered all the material he could-the slides seem to be labeled in that way

Nah. He wouldn't care unless he got comped tickets for a Sea World or casino performance.

Looks like nothing Beach Boy related is selling...
Only thing that even attracted any bids was an unseen negative of Brian & Landy, that got nowhere near their estimate of $7500...  Think the top bid was $150; the estimates for most of these items are crazy!  Elvis' jet was estimated between 2 and 3.5 million, and sold for 430,000

Suddenly everything Dennis & Brian related is selling, but not for anywhere near the $30,000 estimates.  More in the $400. range.  A couple of slides of Dennis & Brian in Miami '77

Ed, when I saw that an Elvis Jet was auctioned I was planning on posting it on your "Dennis Wilson 1944-1983" Facebook site and ask if that was the plane you took the pictures of Brian, Dennis and Jan Berry. But when I saw the inside of the plane the answer was quite obvious: It wasn't. And it wasn't the "Lisa-Marie" either, was it?

I had a friend named Milt.  Once he asked a girl to dance.  She said ... "No".  He immediately responded ... " I guess a b.j. is out of the question then?"

Same guy?

THAT really happened.  I wonder if some of that 'paperwork' in this chest of drawers is real though?  I mean how does a piece of furniture just make it's way out the door w/o being checked to see if there's any sh*t in it?

Milt's offspring don't appear to be all that bright.  Neither was the Milt I knew.

Same guy?   Geek

Well, Milt Love's offspring are certainly successful. To have a son who makes any level of professional athletics is astounding, let alone the top league. And then a grandson that does the same on a higher level. Impressive. Another son reaches the upper echelon of the Music industry. Other offspring, though lower profile, seem to have had success as well.
