Man, what a drag.
How about recording music if you're in any sort of a position to do that? Even
a capella
stuff...

Yes, good suggestion, and also get a couple of dumbbells (no wisecracks) to keep your upper body in good condition.

Maybe consider a book list of some essential classics - something to give you a background to some of the basic fundamental issues and human interests in Western civilization. Here's a truncated version of my own personal go-to list. It is unfortunately heavy on the dead white men but you can fill in your own blank spots:
The Iliad, Homer
The Odyssey, Homer
The Divine Comedy, Dante
Hamlet, William Shakespeare
King Lear, William Shakepeare
Don Quixote, Cervantes
Meditations on First Philosophy, Rene Descartes
Paradise Lost, John Milton
Principia, Isaac Newton
An Essay Concerning Human Understanding, John Locke
History of England, David Hume
Discourse on the Origin and Basis of Inequality Among Men, Rousseau
Treatise on Tolerance – Voltaire
Common Sense, Thomas Paine
The Limits of State Action, Wilhelm von Humboldt
William Blake poetry collection
Eugenie Grandet, Balzac
Gogol’s Short Stories
Edgar Allen Poe poetry collection
David Copperfield, Charles Dickens
The Communist Manifesto, Karl Marx
Emily Dickinson poetry collection
Les Miserables, Victor Hugo
Fathers and Sons, Ivan Turgenev
Leo Tolstoy’s 20 Greatest Short Stories
War and Peace, Leo Tolstoy
Great Short Works of Leo Tolstoy (novellas)
Middlemarch, George Eliot
Bakunin on Anarchy, Michael Bakunin
The Brothers Karamazov, Fyodor Dostoyevsky
The Picture of Dorian Gray, Oscar Wilde
Tess of the D’Ubervilles, Thomas HArdy
Collection of Anton Chekhov’s short stories
The Seagull, Anton Chekhov
Rainier Rilke poetry collection
Swann’s Way, Marcel Proust
The Dubliners, James Joyce
The Trial, Franz Kafka
TS Eliot poetry collection
William Carlos Williams poetry collection
WB Yeats poetry collection
Mrs. Dalloway, Virginia Woolf
The Sound and the Fury, William Faulkner
Ernest Hemingway short stories
Such is My Beloved, Morley Callaghan
Anarchosyndicalism, Rudolf Rocker
Homage to Catalonia, George Orwell
The Stranger, Albert Camus
The Catcher in the Rye, J.D. Salinger
Langston Hughes poetry collection
Allen Ginsberg poetry collection
The Double Hook, Sheila Watson
Pale Fire, Vladamir Nabokov
One Hundred Years of Solitude, Gabriel Garcia Marquez
A People’s History of the United States, Howard Zinn
Green Grass, Running Water, Thomas King

Wow, CSM----
truncated,
you say?!!
Nice to see Mr Blake in there----a most extraordinary gentleman on all fronts. However, I contest that David Copperfield wrote a book about himself.
Nitpicking on my part, of course (the Dutch have a great word for nitpicking:
mierenneuken,
ant-fucking.
).

Are you telling me the magician's self-titled autobiography is not a classic in your eyes???
You are quite right! Good eye. I will edit it now. Thanks for that.
I also edited to switch around Odyssey and Iliad to their correct order. I would hate for things to become so confusing right off the bat.

From the top of my head, definitely read 'A Cat In The Rain', 'Old Man At The Bridge' (probably have this title wrong, but I can double check later, and 'A Small Well Lighted Place' (this one is probably my favorite short by Hemingway)...all can be found in his main short story compilation books.
Have you read Islands in the Stream by Hemingway? That is my favorite book of his - has absolutely everything from romance, exotic places, loss, fighting, fishing, the last section of the book is an interesting look into Nazi submarine chasing around Cuba during WWII. Highly recommend that one if you haven't read it.
Edit: also I hope you get better soon. Sometimes these awful situations can completely transform our lives for the better; I was going through a rough time a few years ago and heavily got into The Beach Boys because of it. Likewise you could end up finding another interest that will spark years of learning and possibilities. I'm hoping for the best for you!

How did you break your leg and ankle? If it required screws and plates it must have been a bell of a fall.

You won't believe this-- I was skateboarding for the first time, stepped off it, and landed on my ankle facing outward. It pulled my whole ankle out of the socket and dislocated it. My leg collapsed into my ankle and broke it... 2 bones and many ligaments were broken.

The shock took away most of the pain... I heard it snap and seeing it almost gave me a heart attack, which in turn helped to numb the pain until I was on the heavy meds.
I got pretty lucky when I think of it like that, actually...

That kind of reminds me of something. When I was nine, I was on my hands and knees at my grandparents house, and my right leg suddenly cracked loudly, and kind of caved in. I nearly smacked my chin into the sharp edge of the coffee table. Then came the single weirdest thing I have ever experienced in my life. I wiggled my body a little, and felt nothing there. I was looking directly at my leg, saw it moving, and felt nothing. It was like my leg was missing a bone. I had broken my leg about an inch away from my hip. I ended up in traction for a few months with my leg suspended up in the air.
