April 20 and 21 1962-The BBs performed at Redondo High School in Redondo Beach, CA- with the Vibrants and the Belairs.  Apr 28 1962-The BBs allegedly appeared on the local Pacific Ocean Park Dance Party TV show, which by that time was hosted by Bob Eubanks.

Apr 21, 1963-The BBs taped their first national TV app on The Red Skelton Show, performing Surfin’ USA and Things We Did Last Summer in matching striped sailor shirts. It didn’t air until September. Apr 24 1963-The BBs flew to Chicago to start their first real tour outside California-with Al in place of Brian.  They played the Val Air Ballroom in Des Moines on April 25. On April 26 they played the YWCA Teen Canteen, in Rockford, IL. On April 27 they played the Dance Land Ballroom in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. On April 28 they played The Terp in Austin Minnesota and on April 30 they were at the Arkota Ballroom in Sioux Falls SD.

April 29 1964-The BBs worked on Don’t Back Down, We’ll Run Away and Our Favorite Recording Sessions. Keith Badman stated that Carl’s Big Chance (Memphis Beach), Hushabye, Wendy, Drive In and Let’s Live (Before We Die)-were also recorded on this date, but Brad Elliot stated that they were recorded at unknown sessions in Apr and May).  The next day they worked on the track for “We’ll Run Away.”

Apr 21 1965-The BBs, with Brian, made their second appearance on the ABC TV Shindig. This was probably taped around March 29.  The BBs performed Do You Wanna Dance, Fun-Fun-Fun, Long Tall Texan, Please Let Me Wonder and Help Me Rhonda, as well as Their Hearts Were Full of Spring.

That night the BBs were on an east coast tour and played the JFK Coliseum in Manchester, NH with Glen Campbell. The following day they played at the Memorial Auditorium in Lowell, MA. On April 23 the BBs, with Glen, appeared at the Civic Center in Baltimore. Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs, The British Walkers and The Uptowns were also on the bill.  On April 24 1965 the BBs played the Washington Coliseum in DC.  Both Glen and Bruce were present at this show-though Bruce seems to have just been backstage.  On April 28 1965 the BBs were back in LA to record vocals for Let Him Run Wild.  Two days later they worked on Girl Don’t Tell Me.

Apr 24 1966-the BBs filmed the promo Film of Sloop John B at Carl’s house. The next day they were at Lake Arrowhead to film a promo for God Only Knows with Carl in his odd mask.  On April 28 1966 the BBs played at Duke University and then headed to Cornell University in Ithaca, NY to perform with The Lost and the Uncalled For Three on April 29. On April 30 1966 they performed at Boston College, Boston and then raced to Crane’s Beach in Ipswich, MA to appear on a bill sponsored by MIT with Bob Newhart, Noel Harrison, The Lost, Original Sinners, the Reveliers and the Uncalled For Three.  They were very late getting to the show and got cut off by a curfew.  They agreed to play a make-up show a week later.

April 21 1967 the BBs played at Virginia Tech, VA with the Happenings.  The next day they played at the University of Illinois, in Champaign with the Pickle Brothers, Jim and Jean and The Casinos.  On April 23 they performed at the Cincinnati Gardens with the Casinos, Pickle Brothers and Buckinghams and then raced to the Memorial Auditorium in Canton, OH to play with Jim and Jean, the Buckinghams and Terry Knight and the Pack. That same bill played the Civic Theatre in Akron, OH on April 24. On April 25 the BBs played the Westchester County Center in NY with the Buckinghams, Jim and Jean, the Chain Reaction, the Teardrops and Satan’s Helpers.  The Chain Reaction had won a high school battle of the bands for the chance to be on the bill and featured a young Steven Tyler on vocals.

The BBs then headed to the Long Island Arena in Commack, NY on April 26, 1967-where Carl was arrested prior to the show by the FBI and charged with draft evasion.  He still played that night but had to agree to appear in LA court the following week.  On April 27 the BBs hit the War Memorial Arena in Rochester with The Buckinghams, Tommy James and the Shondells, and Jim and Jean).  On April 28 they played the Back Bay Theater in Boston with the same bill.  The tour ended with shows at Symphony Hall in Newark, NJ and at Union College in Schenectady, NY on April 29.  As I relate in my book, the Newark show got ugly when Dennis got into an onstage fight with the drummer in local opening act-The Doughboys.  He’d borrowed his drums to play at the show and Dennis felt that he treated them with less then proper care.

Apr 21 1968 the BBs played in Galveston, Beaumont, and Houston, Texas with Buffalo Springfield and the Strawberry Alarm Clock. This was towards the end of the tour disrupted by MLK’s death. That bill was at the Municipal Coliseum in Lubbock on April 22 and then hit the Coliseum in Greensboro and the Dorton Arena in Raleigh, NC on April 23. These shows had been scheduled for the beginning of the tour but were postponed due to chaos after King’s death. The troubled tour ended at the Mid South Coliseum in Memphis on April 24, another makeup date. The Buffalo Springfield broke up two weeks later.  April 23 1969 the BBs completed the Murry/Brian composition “Breakaway.”  Soon afterwards Mike headed back to India for a short trip, which caused him to miss the opening of a BB tour in early May.

April 21 1970 the BBs played the Majestic Theater in Christchurch, New Zealand on their second tour down under. They were supposed to play in Dunedin the next night but it was canceled and they headed to Australia. As I relate in my book-they didn’t get much sleep that night as they arrived at 1 AM and opted to give a number of press interviews.  They played Festival Hall in Melbourne on April 23 and Perry Lakes Stadium in Perth on April 24.  They were in Adelaide on April 25 and Canberra on April 26, before a show at Sydney Stadium on April 27.  They then headed to the Capitol Hall, Wollongong on the 28th and the Century Theater in Newcastle on April 29, 1970.  They were at the Festival Hall in Brisbane on April 30.  Brian had threatened to take part in the tour but opted instead to stay home and produce a country album for then manager Fred Vail.  It didn’t have much commercial potential and was never released.

Apr 22 1971 the BBs played the JFK Coliseum in Manchester, NH on the first date of their Chip Rachlin promoted “comeback” tour. Many of these shows had very low turnouts and the BBs rode a greyhound bus to shows. They were at Bucknell University the next night and then headed down to Duke University to perform with the Grateful Dead, New Riders of Purple Sage, Paul Butterfield Blues Band and Mountain on April 24.  They were back north to make their famous appearance at the Dead’s Fillmore East show on April 27.  Dylan was watching this show from the mixing booth and related the famous quote that they were “They’re Fucking Good, Man!” The BBs played in Lowell, MA on April 28 1971 and then at Loews State Theater in Providence, RI on April 29. They performed for a disappointing turnout of less then a 1,000 people at Painters Mill Music Fair in Maryland on April 30.

April 21 1972 the BBs played the University of Kentucky with Blondie and Ricky. This was only two weeks after the departure of Bruce.  The BBs played a rowdy show at Penn State the next day.  I related in my book (with Jon) that the audience was pretty disrespectful to the BBs for not giving them the oldies they wanted to hear right away (it was their custom in that period to play the big faves at the end of the night and do a lot of new tunes first) and the BBs responded in kind.  The BBs played Ferris State College on April 23 and at Central Michigan University on April 24, 1972.  They played another rowdy show in Greenbay, WI on April 25. The audience was so angry at the BBs for not giving them what they wanted to hear that many people stormed out before the show ended (thus missing the chance the hear the songs they wanted so desperately at the end). The BBs played the Agora in Columbus on April 27 and at John Carroll University in Cleveland on April 28.  The April 72 tour ended with dates at Purdue University on April 29 and Butler University in Indianapolis on April 30 (I wasn’t aware of this show when I wrote my book).

Apr 21 1973 the BBs played the Music Hall in Houston with the Doobie Brothers. The BBs played with the Doobies at the Bronco Bowl in Dallas the next night as well. The BBs were at the Celebrity Theater in Phoenix on April 25 and at tiny Regis College in Denver on April 26.  They played the Kiel Opera House in St Louis on April 27, the University of Kansas on April 28 and the Music Hall in Omaha on April 29, 1973.  The Omaha show only attracted 2,610 fans and was another one of the band vs. audience affairs.  There was a lot of heckling from the crowd and Mike and Dennis responded by acting indifferent.  Eventually the crowd and band reconciled.

April 21 1974 the BBs ended another tour with an appearance at Youngstown State College in OH.  Billy Hinsche filmed portions of this tour.  Apr 29 1974-the BBs worked on Good Timin’, which ultimately saw release in 1979. Apr 21, 1976 Dennis held a solo session to work on 2000 Years Ago, String Thing 2, Long String Song and Hawaiian Dream (which became Farewell My Friend) and the intro to Friday Night.  The BBs were also working on 15 Big Ones and on Apr 27 they worked on Let’s Dance (unreleased), That Same Song and Al’s Don’t Fight the Sea. The latter two songs were the subjects of another session on April 28, 1976. Apr 29 1976 was devoted to a recording of Michael Row the Boat that makes the rounds.

Apr 21 1978 the BB, with Brian, played at New Mexico State University.  They were at Arizona State University in Tempe on April 22 and the University of Arizona in Tucson on April 23 1978.  Sadly Dennis was beginning his downward spiral and a long drunken night ended with him being jailed for being in his room with a minor.  The charges were later dropped but not before a photo of his arrest was spread all over the country in newspapers.  He was sufficiently back in control to hold recording sessions on Apr 26 and 27 for Under the Moonlight and one on April 28 for I Don’t Want To Go. That same day Mike was at USC to play his first show with Celebration to promote the Almost Summer soundtrack.  Dean Torrence, Brian and Carl joined him.  Another Celebration show took place at UC Santa Barbara the next day.

On April 21 1979 all six BBs were at Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati with Ian Matthews.  By this time Dennis was becoming very erratic.  When they played at University of Toledo on April 22 he acted very unprofessionally as reviewers noted. The BBs played Southern Illinois University on April 23, followed by shows at Middle Tennessee State U on April 24, which Dennis missed due to too much partying, and the Civic Center in Roanoke on April 25. They performed in Columbia, SC on April 26 and the University of Tennessee on April 27. Dennis was drunk at the latter show and acted wild. His girlfriend Christine McVie and Lindsey Buckingham joined them onstage at Rupp Arena in Lexington, KY on April 28 and the BBs played in Greensboro on April 29. The tour concluded at the Capitol Center on April 30. Christine McVie again came onstage for encores of Good Vibrations, Barbara Ann and Fun, Fun, Fun.  While the BBs were on tour, their taped appearance on Midnight Special aired. As was becoming common, Dennis looked pretty out of it but he still sang a nice version of Angel Come Home.  They also played Good Vibrations, Here Comes the Night, Surfin USA, Lady Lynda and Rock and Roll Music with Byrd Roger McGuinn.

April 21 1980-the BBs, minus Dennis-who’d been kicked out of the band played at Michigan State in East Lansing. The next day they were in Saginaw, Michigan and performed at the University of Dayton on April 23. Brian was on this tour but spent most of his time smoking cigarette after cigarette and staring into space, though he always took a verse of Sloop John and Surfer Girl. They appeared at the Armory in Kingston, PA on April 24 and in Buffalo on April 25.  The tour concluded at the Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto on April 27, 1980.

April 23 1981 Carl performed a solo show at the Roxy in LA.  A photo from this gig by Ed Roach is in my book (with Jon).  Other photos by Ed show that Dennis was there in a tuxedo, as was Brian, Mike, Bruce, Ricci Martin and the Rovell sisters-a pretty cool gig to be in the audience for! Carl played another show at the Old Waldorf in San Francisco on April 25.  April 21 1983-Mike and Dean played an ESBB show at Rockefeller’s in Houston, TX. April 21 1984 the BBs performed in Jacksonville, FL.

Apr 29 1985-The BBs played the Second Genesis Benefit, at the Marriot Hotel in Washington DC. Around this time the BBs filmed a music video for Getcha Back and taped an appearance on Solid Gold that aired in May performing the new single.  April 25 1987-the BBs played the Sports Stadium in Albuquerque.  The next day they were at Hi Corbett Field in Tucson.  Both of these were baseball game shows.  The BBs then headed north and played in Lethbridge, Canada on April 29 and at Northlands Coliseum in Edmonton on April 30 1987. During this period Brian filmed a cameo in Wall of Voodoo’s music video for their remake of “Do It Again”.  April 27 and 28 1990, the BBs played four shows at the Sunrise Musical Theater in Florida.

April 25 1991 the BBs played at Baylor University in Waco, TX.  On April 27 they were in Albuquerque, NM and the next day they played at Cohen Stadium in El Paso. Apr 25 1992 they played their annual San Diego show at Balboa Park.  This was the ponytails and cheerleaders period of the band.  April 21,1993 the BBs played at he Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach, FL.  The next day they were at the Sunrise Music Theatre with Henry Gross.  Apr 24 1994 Mike Love’s wedding in Lake Tahoe marked a reunion with cousin Brian after a long estrangement.  Illustrating their newfound camaraderie-Brian, at his heaviest during the 1990s, joined the BBs to tape an appearance on Baywatch on April 25 1995. He also appeared with them in Vegas on April 28 and 29 1995 at the Riviera.

I could go on-but this is quite a long post.
