I've heard it sung by Blondie, Brian, and Carl (including in person by Blondie and Brian), and I 100% agree that Blondie was the right choice. Brian originally said he wrote it with Ray Charles in mind, and I think Blondie's voice had the most soul to capture what Brian was going for.
Blondie is best choice, that's settled. Who's the next best? Do you think Al could be cat's meow at singing SOS? I don't know about Al. I frankly couldn't hear Al or Mike do it. But, I've heard good versions of Carl singing it. So, I'd rate him 2nd best. And Brian did a good job with it when I saw The Beach Boys in 2012, but that was, of course, later era Brian, whose voice isn't as good as Carl's.

Yes, Mike's voice isn't fit to these songs. But, Al's could be realy cool. To digress, when I listened to his voice 1st, I said "It's garage-y". Al could sing garage like phone directory.

Sail on Sailor is a really cool song with an excellent chugging beat. Blondie's vocal is definitely his best contribution to The Beach Boys. Five stars

I've always thought that Carl sounded best singing it. I'd give the song a 5 also.

Today's song is Steamboat Another Dennis gem. Felicitous touches all along the way, including a ship's bell. It took a while for me to even notice this song on the album! Five.

This song puts you right there in that foggy, tree surrounded river. Even the guitar solo sounds like you can hear it being played from the engine room on this ship. An absolute perfect song.

Steamboat is perfect, and one of the reasons I love Holland is that The Beach Boys have some great musical moments on the album, including the guitar solo here (and the moog solo in Leaving This Town). These types of moments are far too few in the Beach Boys canon, and almost non-existent post Holland

It hit me a few years back just how awesome this chugging song is. It kicked Funk Pretty out of it's spot as my second favorite track on Holland (S.O.S. being the fave). FIVE!

Today's song is Big Sur. As much as I love the 4/4 version, this one was the right choice for Holland. One of Mike's most endearing songs. Five.

I'll give it a 4. Song is amazing, but I'm not a huge fan of spoken word sections in songs.

I’m kinda with BummerinParadise about spoken word parts in songs (it’s the only part of ‘Lonely Sea’ I don’t care for), but this track is so well done and the narration is so good I don’t mind it at all.
The mixing on this album is so darn good and this song is a perfect example of it. Sounds like this song is being played somewhere in a forested canyon of Big Sur.

5/5 I am a fan of spoken bits. Anyway, it's great to hear Alan's speaking voice on disc (I believe the previous occasion was the intro to "Cassius/Sonny"). Great comment there, rab. Five.
