Before discussing Side 2 of Sunflower, can we discuss & rate "The Beach Boys' Christmas Album" (1964), which I announced to do this month several months ago?
My apologies if it bothers you to split discussions for one album into two.

So... here we go:
◎The Beach Boys' Christmas Album (1964)
1. Little Saint Nick
2. The Man with All the Toys
3. Santa's Beard
4. Merry Christmas Baby
5. Christmas Day
6. Frosty the Snowman
7. Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town
8. We Three Kings of Orient Are
9. Blue Christmas
10. White Christmas
11. I'll Be Home for Christmas
12. Auld Lang Syne

[Non-Album Tracks]
The Lord's Prayer
Things We Did Last Summer

Today's song is Little Saint Nick.

Shamefully I'm not familiar with the original 1964 album. (Maybe the whole Ultimate Christmas thing is a bit overwhelming.) So I've got it playing now. Grin

Although I prefer the 45 of "LSN" because of the added glockenspiel and celesta, the album version still sounds cool. I've often wondered whether the slurs on the words "Saint Nick" in the chorus are part of a vocal tradition or straight from the BW brain.

Five.

Today's song is Little Saint Nick.

I like that it has the backbeat of Little Deuce Coupe, and I like Mike's perky vocals. I like it enough to give it FOUR.

I think it is interesting that the song's initial melody (heard in the Alternate version) was partially recycled for both Drive-In and Amusement Parks USA. It started as a much more pronounced hot-rod rocker before becoming the bubblegum Christmas classic we all know and love.

Today's song is The Man with All The Toys.

I'd often wondered where I'd heard those "ba's" before. To quote a post from 28 December 2016 on my other other board:

I enquired at Smiley about a year ago way back about another song with the same background vocal accents on the second beat as in "TMWATT" and got an answer from the ever courteous Lee Dempsey. It was the ending of "Deep Purple" by Nino Tempo and April Stevens, a massive hit in 1963, a year earlier than "Toys":

That same day (!), I inadvertently ran into another gem (this time from 1965) that does the same thing----The Vogues' "Five O'Clock World":

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXKRwqBmC4A

And bless me if I didn't hear a fourth great song with this effect within the past hour----"Little Things" by Dave Berry, another from 1965:

Anyway...

Great joyous song. Five.

Today's song is The Man with All The Toys.

I used to like this song alot more than I do now. My problem with it is the super quiet drums. The Brian Wilson solo version is way way better and is the only remake I like better than the original. THREE.

The Man With All the Toys is also a 5 for me. Probably my favorite of the album.

Today's song is Santa's Beard.

I listened to the entire 1964 album yesterday and loved everything I heard, so I've no reason not to give it a five.  Grin

Today's song is Santa's Beard.

Little Saint Nick's unidentical twin. And equally as catchy. Cool counter vocals. Nice. FOUR

A throwaway with the "merry christmas baby" line tacked on to give it a holiday theme. 3.

Today's song is Merry Christmas, Baby.

This is my favorite track on the album. I dig the bouncy bass guitar. Neat song. FOUR
