3 great songs & couple nice ditties doesn't equal 3 to me, even if it's short album. But, it doesn't equal 1 either. Therefore, it's 2. The bottom line stays - I don't really like it.

Blame Mr Desper's study video for kindling my interest in this album. I had regarded it as fluff until then.

Friends is an album of pastel hues... well, perhaps not the extraordinary closer. Smokin

Five, anyway.

About a four. I don't think it's quite as strong as Smiley Smile or Wild Honey, but still contains far more of Brian's musical brilliance then anything that would come. I feel the album really only suffers from a lack of Tony Asher, Van Dyke Parks, or... Mike Love, who all seem to counteract Brian's deficiencies as a lyric writer, though Busy Doin' Nothin' is possibly one of his best and most unique songs.  So yes, it's a classic, that falters from the occasional saccharine or clumsy lyric. What's bittersweet about the album was that Brian was still clearly growing as a music maker. He was working with the Wrecking Crew again, and beginning to explore the waltz as well as world music.

I really, really want to give this a 5 rating, but will give it a reluctant 4.
Just think that more could have been done with a couple of the songs. I love the instrumentation, incredible harmonies.
The BBs would always leave me wanting more.

(Contrast that with some of the Beatles songs, which nowadays have me thinking, “end it already!” Ex, She’s So Heavy)

I like this attempt at the Dionne Warwick song. I love the wordless vocal part. I want to give it a 5 but I wish it was longer, so I'm giving it 4 (4.5 is more like it, but I'll do 4). On a side note it's The Stranglers version I like best.

Me too! I don't know this version well enough so I'll refrain from voting...

Can't you check youtube? It's pointless when people chime in to say things like "I don't know song X so I'll refrain from voting". Roll Eyes Here, specially for JK https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00kGeyL9Sic

It's good shortie, tastefully done, good to hear Brian give Dennis crucial vocal spot. 5.

I can check YouTube, I can frisbee my 2fer in the 'player, I can even stand on my head listening to it (with help). Point is, it would be an on-the-spot judgement of something that deserves a little more in-depth attention and a little more familiarity that comes from regular listening over a longer period of time. Same goes for "OFAH/OMR". Really, RR, you do try my patience at times. LOL

It's 50 seconds. I shall admit that some things you say don't make sense to me. Like now. But me being curious behind people's posts means I'd comment them &/ or ask questions. Some people really hate questions, it seems.

Today's song - it definitely should be in the official album run. 5.

A lot of things I say don't make much sense to me either but that's my problem.  Grin

I do like questions, as it happens. And I do my best to answer them when I can. (See the "Thread for various etc".)

With fear and trembling (LOL) I confess to not finding Old Folks at Home/Old Man River online. I only see the Old Man River which is fantastic and merits a 5 rating. The only BB reference to Old Folks I see is Brian’s use of the melody on the SG album (South Bay Surfer).

Hi, E. Those two constitute a bonus track on the Friends / 20/20 2fer. I can't find it online either...

In response to "Ol Folks/Ol' Man", my reaction to hearing it for the first time is I imagine, how most people reacted to WIBNTLA or SOMS the first time. Belated 5/5.

It blew my mind when I first bought the Friends 2020 twofer in 2013. It blew my mind further when it was performed three months later at my first Brian Wilson concert. Finished or not, it's one of my favorite Beach Boys songs. Beats most of Smile for me.
